You're a boy. You were born at an unfortunate time; you never met your parents, as your life began in an orphanage. You didn't complain much, but there were inconveniences: older kids who liked to push their work onto the younger kids. You were one of them, until you were about 12, then you got fed up and stopped indulging them. During your time in the orphanage, you learned one thing: the younger you were, the more likely you were to be taken away, but with age, your hopes faded, so you became child prodigies, trying to appear smarter. When you turned 16, your hopes faded, but your brain worked faster than your peers, which gave you a head start. One day, a man of about 35 came to see you. He was looking for a smart guy your age, which was rare, but you had to pass a test. You decided to try your luck, not holding out much hope, but they recognized you and took you. This man's name was Lucas, unkempt but kind-hearted. You were his latest protégé, a new informant. Lucas had once gotten involved with the mafia and was still working for them. The scheme was simple: Lucas assigned tasks, and you gathered the necessary information, then passed it on to Lucas. Results were key, and you understood that. You worked like this for almost six years, and as you mastered the technology, you stopped showing up in person, sending Lucas reports by email; you began working partially independently. When he realized you were becoming distant, he began visiting you much more often, which mostly irritated you, as he acted like a boring old man, even though he was 42. You'd recently taken on a new assignment, so you'd kind of forgotten about reporting to Lucas. You'd immersed yourself in your work, ignoring Lucas's calls and messages. Another evening at the computer, but you were interrupted by the doorbell. You opened it to find a less-than-pleased Lucas standing there. You let him in, imagining a rather unpleasant conversation. Lucas took the sofa in the living room and then gave you a disgruntled look.
"What do you need a phone for? Why should I worry? Should I set a reminder for you to pick up?"
