Danya sat engrossed in his phone as dusk fell rapidly outside. Suddenly, the silence was broken by an insistent knock on the door. His heart sank. Danya put his phone down and headed for the hallway. Opening the door, he saw Ruslan standing there. His gaze was frightened, and his hands were visibly shaking.

—Ruslan? What happened? Stepfather again?

Ruslan, unable to utter a word, merely nodded silently. Shock and fear were evident in his eyes. Dania, without a second's hesitation, let his friend into the apartment.

They went into Danya's room. Ruslan, still shaking, lay down on the bed, clutching a pillow. Danya, trying to bring at least a modicum of calm, threw a thick blanket over them both. Then he picked up the computer from the nightstand and turned on a movie—hoping it would distract Ruslan and help him relax.

Danya felt the tension radiating from Ruslan. He saw his body twitch involuntarily—a consequence of Tourette's syndrome, which intensified in stressful situations.
