Rengoku Kyojuro

Kyojuro's surname means "purgatory" (rengoku). His name 煉れん獄ごく contains the Kan'yō-on'yomi reading of the kanji "apricot" (kyō), and 杏きょう the Go-on'yomi, meaning "longevity" (ju)寿じゅ and "son" (郎ろう rō) .

Kyojuro could even cause tremors in the ground and nearly knock a train off its tracks by running at such speeds. Kyojuro could also derail an entire train simply by lunging forward. Even after becoming a renowned Demon Slayer, he was still strong enough to instantly rupture his eardrums by slapping them with his hands. Indomitable Will: Kyojuro possessed a fearless spirit and an indomitable will, which even impressed people like Upper Rank Three, Akaza. Since he was a child, he had a strong will and passion within himself due to the promise he made to his late mother. [8] Even when Upper Rank overwhelmed him with powerful attacks, giving Kyojuro insidious wounds, he remained steadfast and resolute. [9] After Kyojuro lost an eye and suffered internal injuries inflicted by Akaza, he still persisted, vehemently expressing his unbreakable will and determination, saying that he would protect the lives of other innocent people no matter what. [10] Finally, when Akaza's fist pierced his solar plexus, it triggered a memory that reminded Kyojuro of his mother again, giving him the final push to cut Upper Rank's throat. [11] In the end, although his efforts were in vain, his incredible determination had a profound effect on Tanjiro, giving him the incentive to keep going no matter the confusion he faced. [12]

Keen Intellect: As a swordsman from a lineage of Flame Hashira, Kyojuro had access to generations of knowledge and combat tactics, as well as the training of previous Flame Hashira, such as his father, Shinjuro Rengoku. As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Kyojuro was a very powerful and skilled fighter. [4] Before succeeding his father, Kyojuro had already proven himself to be an exceptional fighter. He successfully avenged the deaths of the nine Demon Slayers who died at the hands of the Flute Demon and later single-handedly defeated Hairo, of Lower Rank Two, who even assessed his swordsmanship before dying. Furthermore, his father, Shinjuro Rengoku, stated that after ceasing to teach his son, Kyojuro trained to become a Hashira by learning from the Flame Breathing style guide, a book that consisted of only three volumes.

As further testimony to his abilities, Akaza, the Top Three and one of the strongest known demons, acknowledged and praised Kyojuro's strength.[6] He even went so far as to offer to turn him into a demon so that he could surpass his human limitations and become stronger, something he only offered to swordsmen whose skills he believed were refined to the highest degree.[7] Akaza also praised his fighting spirit, stating that he was approaching the "Realm of the Highest."

Kyojuro was a great enthusiast in his duties as a Hashira and often appeared cheerfully eccentric. He was kind, pure of heart, and boasted extraordinary technique and swordsmanship, the fruit of rigorous practice and discipline. He was an honorable warrior who adhered to his moral code and principles, instilled in him by his mother from a young age; the most significant of these was his belief that those born strong have a duty to protect the weak.

Kyojuro also loved his family immensely, showing great respect and concern for his father, Shinjuro Rengoku, even as his father became increasingly aggressive and apathetic towards him. He was incredibly encouraging and optimistic with his younger brother, Senjuro Rengoku, believing in him and wishing him the best no matter what. This was even more pronounced during his death, where his last words to his father and younger brother were "take care of your body" and "follow your dreams no matter what." Kyojuro also believed that if someone lacked a great ability, their efforts to achieve their dreams and their desire to help others were ultimately futile.

Beneath his enthusiastic demeanor, Kyojuro was highly logical and tactically astute, acting swiftly and precisely in battle, especially when the lives of others were at stake. Kyojuro was also adept at recognizing talent in others, even in Nezuko Kamado, a demon he initially intended to kill, after witnessing her risk her life to fight and protect others. Though extremely optimistic, Kyojuro sometimes had a premonition that those he believed in might die, particularly his friends whom he cherished deeply. Kyojuro was a tall, slender, and muscular young man with fair skin. He had long, somewhat disheveled, bright yellow hair that fell over his face, with red streaks that resembled flames, two shoulder-length bangs, two chin-length bangs on one side of his head, and a messy ponytail at the nape of his neck. He had forked black eyebrows and golden eyes that turned red around the irises, with white pupils. Kyojuro wore the standard Demon Slayer Corps uniform, which is black in the manga and dark brown in the anime. It consisted of a brown button-up jacket with a high collar and long sleeves, featuring gold buttons and a shirt pocket on the left breast, with the kanji for Destroy (滅悁つ) emblazoned on the back. Underneath the jacket, he wore a white long-sleeved shirt with a collar. His uniform was fastened with a white belt at the waist and included traditional tattsuke-hakama trousers of the same color. Over this, Kyojuro wore a striking haori draped over his shoulders like a cape, with a gradient pattern from white to yellow and red flame-like ridges at the ends. This haori originally belonged to his father, Shinjuro Rengoku, and he most likely wore it when he served as Flame Hashira before Kyojuro inherited the role. As leg socks, she wore a pair of red kyahan decorated with yellow flame motifs rising from the bottom up, brown tabi socks, and a pair of white zōri sandals with red straps.

Kyojuro Rengoku (Rengoku Kyōjurō) was an important supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a main character in the Mugen Train arc. He was a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Flame Hashira (En Bashira) of the Taisho era.
