The captain is very strange, don't you think?

Greeting

The search for the island was still incomplete, several days at sea passed in vain and the Team returned back to land, stopping for the night in a motel near the pier

Motel

Detective Hwang sat at the table, holding a phone with some data open on it, and in front of him was a map on which he was crossing out the islands he had already visited in order to find the very island.

The girl knocked on the door. “Detective Hwang? Are you asleep?” she asked, the sound muffled.

“Not yet,” the man replied.

She opened the door slightly and peeked her head out. "Well, since you're still awake... how about we chat?" she peeked out a bag filled with all sorts of snacks and bottles from behind the door . "Let's have a drink."

“Come on in,” Jun Ho smiled back .

I laid everything out on the table and the girl started pouring Soju into glasses.

“Here,” she handed him the glass.

  • "No, thank you," he politely declined .

  • "Oh, no?..." she hesitated. - "Okay then," she took a sip from his glass.

– “What did you want to talk about?” the man asks.

  • "Ah... Um... About Captain Pak. You said you almost drowned, and he saved your life.

  • "Yes, after I was shot on the island and fell into the sea, he pulled me out of the water and took me to the hospital, I would have definitely drowned."

  • "And you... do you remember anything else?"

The detective raised his eyebrows in surprise. "When I woke up in the hospital, I found out about the captain from my mother, and why?"

  • "I just... I didn't pay any attention to it, but when I went out on deck, when I heard that sound in the water, the captain was standing near the side and holding a screwdriver in his hands."

“A screwdriver?” Detective Hwang asked again.

– “Yes! It was dark, but I remember it clearly. Why would he need it? He said he was going to bed.” – The girl opened a bag of chips.

“Yes, but maybe he was scared of something?” the man suggested .

  • "Oh, I don't know... but it's weird. Okay, it doesn't matter, she drank a glass.

Woo-seok is a former loan shark who worked for Mr. Kim (the same one who previously threatened to take Ki-hoon's kidney for debts). When Ki-hoon began hunting the Recruiter, he hired a team of loan sharks, including Woo-seok and Mr. Kim, to search for him in subway stations.

The Key Moment with the Recruiter

In the first episode of the second season, Woo-seok and Mr. Kim track down the Recruiter but are trapped. The Recruiter forces them to play rock-paper-scissors with Russian roulette. Mr. Kim sacrifices himself to save Woo-seok and dies.

This event completely changes Woo-seok. He becomes Ki-hoon's devoted ally not for money, but out of guilt and a desire for revenge.

appearance.

Hwang Joon-ho is a man of strong, athletic build, standing at approximately 178 cm tall, matching actor Wi Ha-joon's height. He has the slender, toned figure of someone in excellent physical condition—a natural fit for a former police officer and detective accustomed to active work and pursuit.

Jun-ho's face has regular, slightly ascetic features. It's more serious than open, with a slight Asian angularity to his cheekbones and a clearly defined jawline. His skin is naturally fair, contrasting with his dark hair and eyes. The most striking feature of his appearance is his eyes. They are a dark brown, deep, attentive, and incredibly expressive. It is his eyes that betray his emotions when the rest of his face remains motionless. Jun-ho's gaze can be icy and professional while stalking, but it warms when he thinks of his brother.

His hair is dark, black, or very dark brown, cut short—a typical neat police cut that doesn't require special styling and doesn't interfere with physical work. It always looks neat, but without a hint of careful styling.

When it comes to clothing, Jun-ho prefers functionality and comfort. In everyday life, he wears simple, understated clothes.

about the character

Joon-ho's personality is a combination of cool, professional composure and inner vulnerability. He's reckless, intelligent, and decisive, yet capable of deep, self-sacrificing love. For his brother, he's willing to risk everything—his life, his career, his future. Even after the gunshot, after the betrayal, he continues to seek not revenge, but rather a reunion and, perhaps, salvation for the part of In-ho that once saved him.

about the character

His abilities are simply astounding. Not only is he physically strong and resilient (despite a kidney transplant), but he also possesses a host of unique skills: he can scuba dive, read Morse code, speak fluent English to avoid raising suspicion among VIP guests, and can adapt instantly to any situation. In one scene, when a VIP wearing a panther mask begins to harass him and demands he take it off, Joon-ho coolly lures him into a private room, pulls out a gun, and interrogates him for information about the games, never losing his composure.

He's driven not simply by a sense of duty, but by an incredible, almost painful love for his brother. He feels indebted to In-ho for donating his kidney and can't bear the thought that his brother could have died. Even when confronted with the shocking truth—his brother isn't a victim, but the mastermind behind the games, the black-masked Frontman—he doesn't stop loving him. In the season one finale, standing on a cliff surrounded by guards, he refuses to side with his brother, even when his brother removes his mask and extends his hand. In-ho shoots him in the shoulder, and Joon-ho falls off the cliff into the sea.

But he survived. In the second season, we see Joon-ho, miraculously saved (on orders from In-ho himself, who secretly ordered his life spared), return to continue the search. Now he's obsessed with finding the island and exposing the games once and for all. Together with Song Ki-hoon, he forms a search team and attempts to shut down the organization that turned his brother into a monster once and for all.

The most tragic thing about Joon-ho is his internal conflict. Even after everything that has happened, he continues to protect his brother. He doesn't tell anyone that Frontman is In-ho, hiding the truth from his superiors and from Ki-hoon, because deep down he still hopes to save the one he loves.

About the character

Hwang Joon-ho is the younger brother of Hwang In-ho (Frontman) and a police detective in Seoul. He was around 28 years old in the first season, and 32 in the second. Since childhood, he has been closely connected to his brother, not only by blood but also physically—when Joon-ho suffered from kidney disease, In-ho donated one of his own, saving his younger brother's life. This act forged an unbreakable bond between them, and Joon-ho has looked up to his older brother as a hero and role model his entire life—perhaps this is what inspired him to join the police and become a detective.

In 2015, In-ho went missing. This was a devastating blow to Joon-ho—the brother to whom he owed his life had simply vanished. For several years, he knew nothing of his fate, until in 2020, he stumbled upon his brother's whereabouts by chance. At the police station, he overheard Song Ki-hoon (the winner of 33 games) trying to tell the police about the deadly tournament. The police didn't believe Ki-hoon, but Joon-ho noticed a business card from the games he left behind—the same one he had seen in his missing brother's room. This marked the beginning of his dangerous journey.

Joon-ho is a detective to the core. He's meticulous in his attention to detail, maintains an icy calm under pressure, and possesses incredible meticulousness. These qualities allowed him to accomplish the impossible: infiltrate the guarded island where the games are held, posing as one of the workers. He followed the vehicles transporting the players, boarded the ship, assaulted the real worker, stole his uniform, and threw his body overboard. Trapped in this hell, he spent several days posing as an employee in a pink jumpsuit, constantly changing identities and risking discovery at any moment.
