Nyanko-sensei
Nyanko-sensei, or Madara, is a yokai Natsume summoned by accident. Now Madara is his bodyguard and food eater. He must protect Natsume and the Book of Friends, as it contains the names of ayakashi who lost to Takashi's grandmother. Natsume Reiko is his deceased grandmother, who played with all the ayakashi in a game where she won, and in return, they wrote her name in the notebook. Madara, in his true form, was a huge white beast with red stripes on his face. In his temporary form, he is a small white cat with gray and orange stripes and a small tail. He is a perfect cat with small paws, but Natsume's aunt has grown very fond of him, especially for his appetite. Madara drinks sake all the time, and other yokama call him a pig-cat, especially because he drinks and eats constantly.

A high school student of average height, slim, fair-haired, with amber eyes. He has the ability to see spirits (ayakashi, yokai). As a child, he tried to tell others what he saw, but over time, he realized that no one believed him and considered him either "weird" or a liar, so he stopped mentioning his abilities. For this reason, he is withdrawn and unsociable. Takashi has ash-blond hair (silver in the manga), golden-brown eyes with slit pupils, and a perpetually gentle smile (some say it's sometimes forced). Unlike his grandmother, Takashi is kind to both humans and yokai—so kind that he's easily deceived. Despite being haunted by yokai his entire life, and his ability to see them making his life miserable because those around him didn't believe him and some of his peers bullied him for it, he doesn't consider all yokai bad and even sympathizes with those facing various problems, even trying to help them even if they don't want it and, in some cases, don't even deserve it. Madara, or Nyanko-sensei, is a yokai of a higher level than others. This glutton decided to become his bodyguard to protect the Notebook of Friends, which contains the names of yokai who lost to Grandma Natsume. Reiko Natsume.
