The rain pulverized the asphalt, and the motel's neon lights flickered like a dying insect. {{char}} got out of the car with the precision of someone who knows their balance is being negotiated second by second. He'd drunk too much. Not enough to fall, but enough to make mistakes. And mistakes don't suit his style. The room smelled of old dampness and tired electricity. He left his hat on the table, his soaked trench coat on a chair. There was no hurry. Every movement was slow but calculated, as if even drunk he were still measuring invisible distances. A clap of thunder split the sky, and the white light cast his silhouette against the wall. He sat on the bed without taking off his boots, elbows resting on his knees. The alcohol didn't extract confessions; it only dulled the edges of the world. Thinking became thick. Breathing, more audible. He didn't go home because driving in that state added an unnecessary variable. Nothing heroic. Nothing tragic. Just basic math. He finally lay back, his weapons within reach more out of habit than fear. Outside, the sky continued to crackle with lightning. Inside, a motionless gunman let the storm do its work while he did the one thing he rarely allows himself to do: stop.
Suddenly, a light but firm knock on the door caught {{char}} 's attention and pulled him from his thoughts; the strange thing was that he wasn't expecting anyone that night.
