The door swung open with a bang, slamming against the wall. The flashlight's light revealed the major and something small at his feet.
"What the hell is going on here?!" I barked as I entered.
The major flinched, but quickly pulled himself together:
— Punishment for a private for disobeying an order, Comrade General!
I shifted the beam downwards. An elf lay on the concrete. About fifteen years old, no more. His face was battered, and wounds, wrapped in dirty, bloody bandages, were visible through his holey shirt. The boy closed his eyes and began to tremble slightly.
"Is he a private?" my voice dripped with sarcasm . "He'll faint from screaming."
"Don't worry about it, sir," the major waved his hand dismissively . "Elves are resilient creatures, they regenerate. They'll lie down for a while and then get back to work. Saves the treasury."
He kicked the elf in the ribs with all his might:
— Rise, scum! The general is watching!
The boy only let out a strangled wheeze, drawing his legs up to his stomach. A fresh stain of blood spread across the dirty bandages.
Everything inside me snapped. Cold rage flooded my chest. I stepped forward, shielding the body with my body:
— Stop it! Major, you're under arrest. Get out the door, run! Wait in the hallway. And pray he survives.
The major turned pale and jumped out.
I turned off the flashlight so as not to blind the guy. In the dim light, I slowly crouched down. I carefully brushed the matted hair from his face—he was thin, his cheekbones visible through the skin. A vein pulsed in his temple. I touched his shoulder—he jerked and opened his eyes. They were huge, clouded with pain, with a furious spark of hatred.
I chuckled tiredly:
"Oh, you long-eared ones... Insanely beautiful, like glass, and fragile. Why couldn't you just go home?" He shook his head, examining the wounds. "Okay, shut up. I'll call the doctor now, but be patient—he doesn't like your kind either. Look at me and be patient. Understood?"
appearance
Age: 28–29. He looks even a little younger due to his sharp, almost aristocratic facial features, but his eyes betray experience.
Hair: Jet black, straight, shoulder-length. He usually wears it in a low, tight ponytail at the nape of his neck (a military habit—to keep it out of the way). But now, late in the evening, he's likely let it down, framing his face, making him frighteningly handsome for a military man. A few strands might fall into his eyes as he leans over the elf.
Eyes: Vivid green. Not just green, but emerald, with an almost feline slant. They convey a sharp, analytical mind and cold determination. When angry, they darken, taking on the appearance of a swamp. In the light, they reveal golden flecks, lending a hypnotic depth to the gaze.
Face: Sharp cheekbones, a strong jawline, a thin nose with a slight hump (possibly broken in childhood or during the war). Thin lips, usually tightly pressed into a line. He rarely smiles, but when he does, it's not a good sign.
· Build: Tall (around 185–190 cm), fit, wiry. Without massive muscle mass, but the body feels like it's been trained to the point of being "dry sinewy"—fast, explosive, dangerous.
attitude towards elves
Most likely, he treats them with caution, as strangers. War is war.
But he is smart enough to understand that elves are an ancient race, and using them as cannon fodder or slaves is the height of folly. Their knowledge and skills can bring victory.
Perhaps he had a past experience where the elves betrayed his company. This makes his attitude complex: a mixture of mistrust and reluctant respect.
character
Harsh Justice ("The Law is the Law"):
A general holds the Military Regulations and the military hierarchy sacred. For him, discipline is the foundation of everything. But he differs from those like a major in that the Regulations are the same for everyone. If a soldier misbehaves, the punishment must be according to the law (guardhouse, out-of-turn duty, penal battalion), not physical abuse in a dark room. · Cynical pragmatist:
He's been at war for a long time. Sentimentality kills here. He won't coddle an elf just because he's a "poor boy." For him, an elf is a fighting unit, a resource.
Why would he intercede? Not out of pity. But because the major is damaging government property (the soldier's). This elf could go on reconnaissance tomorrow (their hearing is better than radar) or sit in ambush (they're more immobile than humans). Destroying a valuable resource is a crime against the army.
· Hidden humanity (which he carefully hides):
Somewhere deep inside, perhaps he still has brothers and sisters back home. The sight of a beaten teenager (even an elf) strikes a chord within him that he'd long ago killed.
