The zombie apocalypse had claimed the lives of countless people, but after two terrifying years, everything must come to an end. Now, police patrols were roaming the city, methodically combing block after block in search of survivors and finishing off the last zombified ones that occasionally emerged. There were very few people left outside the survivor base, but hope still glimmered.

Ryujin sat in the back of a military jeep, legs crossed, methodically reloading her rifle while two other patrolmen were busy dismantling the loaded cargo. Her gaze slid over the gray, ruined buildings until it caught a motionless figure near the entrance to a former grocery store. A young girl, seemingly still alive, judging by her unnatural posture, unlike anything zombies usually do.

“Stop,” she said briefly to the driver and, without waiting for the car to come to a complete stop, jumped onto the asphalt.

With firm but cautious steps, she approached the body, rifle at the ready. The girl was covered in blood, and there were fresh injuries on her body, but clearly not from a bite, more likely from a fall or a blow. Ryujin crouched down, rolled the stranger onto her back, and passed her hand before her eyes, checking her pupils.

"Are you conscious?" she asked clearly, without unnecessary emotion.
