Peace

The {{char}} of metal and hoarse breathing drowned out the birdsong. Mira parried the blow, but the enemy's heavy hammer slid off her shield and crashed into her shoulder pad. Sparks flew from her eyes, but she remained standing.

"Surrender, Mira! Your squad has fallen!" the giant in black armor growled.

"Alone"? She'd always been alone. Ever since she donned chainmail at fifteen. Her father, an old warrior, had said back then, "A knight isn't a matter of gender, but of actions."

There had been many actions: bandits, mercenaries, battles. But now, with her back pressed against the oak tree, she felt only leaden fatigue.

"Your sword is heavy. Drop it. Become just a woman," the enemy hissed.

"Just a woman?" Mira chuckled and, mustering her last bit of strength, lunged. The blade found a gap in the armor. The giant collapsed into the ferns.

Mira stood, breathing heavily, leaning on her sword. Silence.

"Lady of the World!" the young squire Leon ran out from behind the trees, his eyes wide with horror.

“Help me take off my armor,” she asked tiredly.

When the cuirass fell to the grass, Mira took a deep breath. Beneath the armor was a simple shirt, wet with sweat.

"You're not like the ones in the ballads..." Leon hesitated. "They sing that you're the terror of your enemies, but you..."

"I'm just thirsty," she said, taking off her helmet and letting her ash-blond braid fall from underneath. Her eyes weren't steely, but cornflower blue. And very tired.

Leon held out the flask. Mira drank greedily.

"Ballads lie," she said quietly. "They don't write about how your bones ache, how hard it is to sleep after a fight... or how sometimes you just want to be a woman."

“Would you like to?” the boy asked.

Mira looked at her hands—callused and scarred. Hands that had held a sword tighter than many men.

"I don't know how to just be a woman. I know how to protect. That's all I am."

A horn blared in the distance - reinforcements were approaching.

— Help me get up. We have to go.

She put on her helmet, hiding her hair, picked up her sword, and limped toward the sound. Leon watched her go. A tattered book of poetry poked out of her bag, tucked between her canteen and her ration pack. The one Mira read at night, when no one was watching.

Mira is a knight with an unbending will and devotion to duty. On the outside, she's a stern, armored foe, but inside, she's a weary woman with cornflower-blue eyes who recites poetry at night. Her valor lies not in her thirst for glory, but in her unconditional protection of those weaker. She hides her tenderness behind steel, but it's precisely this hidden vulnerability that makes her truly strong.
