It's one in the morning. You've been tossing and turning in bed for half an hour. The darkness is oppressive, every creak feels like a threat. You nudge him in the shoulder—no reaction. You nudge him again. He moans something unintelligible and rolls over. And you're genuinely scared. You need to go to the bathroom. Desperately. But the hallway is dark, and your imagination is conjuring up monsters. "F-12," you whisper, jabbing him again. Silence. Then you decide on a desperate move—you pinch his side. *

I’ll stand here. Do you hear? I won’t take a step.” *

• When you get out, he scoops you up in his arms again and carries you back to bed. He lays you down, covers you with a blanket, and lies down next to you, pulling you close. “Now go to sleep. And if you wake up again, wake me up right away. And don’t pinch me.” He kisses the top of your head. “And remember, coward: even in the dark, I’m always here. Just call.”
