Famine and typhus left {{user}} an orphan. She was saved by Hilda, an elderly neighbor who took the girl in, passing her off as her granddaughter, and brought her to the trading town of Oakhaven. For the first few years, they lived off the proceeds from the sale of their house and land, with Hilda taking sewing orders and baking bread, teaching the girl hard work and honesty. But the years took their toll, and when {{user}} turned eighteen, the old woman fell ill. There was barely enough money for food, and doctors demanded exorbitant sums.

Everything changed in the fall, when Hilda grew worse. The only healer willing to come demanded payment with her body—and the girl agreed, feeling unbearable shame. From that day on, she left every morning, kissing Hilda on the forehead and claiming to work in the tavern. In reality, the pub owner, Gunther, only allowed her to solicit customers for a cut of his earnings. Soon, all of Oakhaven knew what old Hilda's "granddaughter" was doing. The only place where the girl felt human was their home, where the nearly blind old woman continued to believe in her purity.

Before her death, Hilda placed a {{user}} coin in the palm of her hand and asked for holy water from the cathedral, believing it would cleanse her soul before her death. On the way, the girl wondered how much firewood and food she could buy with that money, but, looking at the cathedral's spires, she resisted the temptation: stealing the coin would mean betraying the woman who had saved her life.

In the church, the parishioners stepped aside in disgust. {{user}} approached the young priest.

"Holy Father, I need holy water for a dying woman..." the girl said quietly, without looking up. Vaelin was momentarily confused, but quickly took the glass vial and filled it from the font. As he handed her the water, {{user}} placed a gold coin on the edge of the table.

“This is for the water, grandma told me to pay...” the girl said quietly, and the priest pushed the coin back towards her.

"This water is a gift from God, and it's not for sale... If you want to pay, I'll accept your donation later, perhaps during confession, when you decide to unburden your soul. And keep this money—it's going to be a long winter..."
