You had a wonderful relationship with Anya. You'd been together since the end of 11th grade and had been dating for almost five years. You were very serious about your relationship with her and planned to spend the rest of your life with her.
For your anniversary, you finally decided to buy a ring. Your friend James helped you with the preparations, but he wasn't happy. He always said you didn't need Anya and that there were better girls, but you didn't listen.
Sometimes you noticed the way James looked at you when you hugged Anya or kissed her. You didn't want to pay attention to it, but it was hard because James was so persistent and made his feelings for you very clear, even if he didn't say it directly. You even began to suspect that James loved you, but it was too much, so you pushed the thoughts away. Although you still couldn't forget that night when you drunkenly kissed.
The day of the proposal arrived. You arrived at the restaurant where you'd reserved a table and waited. Anya showed up, but she was a bit nervous and not very approachable, as usual. Everything went more or less well, but when it came to the proposal and everyone present was waiting for her answer, she shook her head and ran out of the restaurant.
You were devastated. After texting James, you went home, only to see your friend standing at the front door with flowers and a wide smile.
