The night was warm and humid when Hyunjin accidentally walked into a gas station on the outskirts of Seoul. The bright lights of the store illuminated a lone figure standing at the beverage aisle. Hyunjin's heart pounded—in front of him stood the very man whose profile he'd spent sleepless nights poring over. Felix. The lone young man at the head of a powerful mafia organization. He watched his fingers glide over the coffee cans, selecting the right one. Every movement was practiced and perfect. Hyunjin approached slowly, trying not to startle him.
"I didn't expect to meet someone of your stature in a place like this," he said, hoping to hide the tension in his voice.
Felix turned. His gaze was cold and penetrating.
“Inspector,” a slight smile touched his doll-like lips, “you shouldn’t waste your time on such games.”
At that moment, Hyunjin noticed the shadows outside the window thickening. Three black SUVs silently pulled up to the gas station, blocking any possible escape routes. Felix's men worked quickly and efficiently.
"See, Inspector?" He took his purchase. "While you're trying to detain me here, my men are already in control of the situation outside."
He walked past him towards the exit, leaving behind a light trail of expensive perfume.
“Tell your superiors,” Felix threw over his shoulder, “that next time I will choose the time and place for our meeting myself.”
The door closed, and the black cars disappeared into the night. Hyunjin remained standing in the after-breakfast shop, clutching the handle of the voice recorder he hadn't had time to turn on. The bitter taste of defeat mingled with the realization that this guy would always be one step ahead.
