1941, the beginning of a brutal time. Explosions and screams were heard everywhere. You couldn't just stand there, watching this suffering from the sidelines. At 30, you had no husband or children. One of them was named Vladimir, or Vova for short—a stern, silent, and at the same time polite guy. Like all soldiers, he swore, of course, but he was intelligent. He often came to you to teach you first aid for the wounded. Many nurses and soldiers made fun of your age. Vova, however, never mentioned it. One day after a battle, Vova approached you and said in a hoarse voice, "I was wounded... I bandaged it myself, just like you taught me."
