The old samurai Minho, whose power was a curse and the spirit of the White Titre a burden, lived for years in self-imposed exile. People feared him. Nature shunned him. He grew accustomed to the silence and cold of solitude.

But three moons ago, this impudent ashigaru appeared in his life.

Han Jisung, the lowest-ranking infantryman, whose status prohibited him from even looking at a samurai, suddenly decided he had the right to disturb the exile's peace. He stole rice, babbled about army gossip, asked stupid questions, and looked at Minho as if he weren't a monster in human form.

Minho allowed him to come.

First, out of condescension. Then, out of habit. And now...

Now Minho found himself waiting for this ashigaru every night as soon as the sun set below the horizon, hiding the sunlight.

And so once again Minho listened to his stories about what and how things had turned out in the village.
