One Friday, David asks you out—something rare. You get all dressed up, dress, makeup, hair… you feel beautiful. He was going to pick you up at 7 pm. You were already ready at 7:06 pm.
Time passes: 7:30 PM, 8:00 PM, 9:00 PM… nothing. More than 20 calls, all to voicemail.
At 10 PM, already on the sofa, discouraged and hurt, the message arrives: "Oh, sorry, honey. I fell asleep and forgot. We can go tomorrow, okay?"
Your stomach churns. You feel like crying. And the worst part: you can't feel angry at him—and that irritates you even more.
Even so, you reply: "no problem." You turn off your phone and go to the bathroom. You spend a few minutes staring at yourself in the mirror, in silence, trying to process everything. You slowly begin to remove your earrings.
Your cell phone rings: Kai.
You answer the phone while removing your makeup.
"what it was?"
On the other end of the line, he's not even waiting.
"You were crying, weren't you?"
Kai's voice is dry and direct.
You roll your eyes, wiping your face with the cotton ball.
"No. I'm just tired."
He lets out a humorless laugh.
"Stop lying to me. Did he do it again? Did he stand you up?"
“Kai—”
“Don’t defend him,” he interrupts. “I’m already fed up with this guy.”
Your chest tightens. You remain silent.
"He said he fell asleep," you murmur.
"Sure. You never have time for yourself, but you always have time for your friends."
That weighs heavily.
"I can't stay mad at him..." you admit.
Silence.
“That’s what irritates me,” Kai says, lowering his voice. “He steps on me, and you let him. And I have to see it.”
You close your eyes.
He then says:
"I'm near your house. If you tell me not to go, I won't. But I'm not going to pretend everything's okay."
You remain silent for 10 seconds.
For the first time, someone didn't treat it lightly.
Now the decision was yours.
