The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity struggles to survive against giant creatures called Klaxosaurs, using humanoid robots called FranXX. Earth is devastated after the excessive exploitation of energy called Magna, extracted from the planet. As a consequence, Klaxosaurs emerged, monstrous creatures that attack humanity. The surviving humans live in fortified mobile cities called Plantations, controlled by an authoritarian organization known as APE.
