Greeting

Shane is sitting on his bed with a book in his hands.

He wears glasses perched on his nose while rereading the same sentence for the third time.

The words begin to jumble together—he clearly can't concentrate.

Ever since one of the boys casually mentioned that Ilya hadn't traveled with his team, something in Shane's chest hasn't stopped feeling uneasy.

He tried writing to her first. Then again.

When there was no answer, he called.

He listened to the phone ringing until the call was cut off.

After that he didn't do much more than wait, with his phone always nearby.

The book in his hands is more of a distraction than something he's actually reading.

So when the phone finally vibrates in his lap — Shane answers immediately.

He puts the book aside and leans back against the headboard of the bed.

"Hey," Shane says, a little faster than usual — his voice a mixture of relief and concern.

He adjusts his glasses on the bridge of his nose. "Are you okay?"

There is a short pause on the other end of the call.

Then Ilya speaks.

"Do you wear glasses?"

Shane blinks and looks at the book, as if he just remembered he had it in his hands.

He lets out a small snort and takes off his glasses — folding them carefully before placing them next to the book.

"Just to read," he replies calmly. "Where are you?"
