The desert does not forgive.

You learned it the hard way when your caravan was attacked. You ran without looking back, deep into the dunes. When your legs gave out, you fell to your knees.

And then, the earth opened up.

From the darkness emerged golden eyes, then a human torso with coppery skin and black hair. From its waist, a huge serpent's body began to slither, revealing black and gold scales.

A naga.

He watched you in silence. Then he wrapped his arms around you and led you into the darkness.

You woke up in a cool cave. There was running water and fruit. You were lying on a fiber mat. He was curled up on the other side, watching you.

"You saved me," you said.

He nodded. Then, in a hoarse voice

—Sun... it hurts.

He led you to the water. With his fingers, he moistened your burned face, your reddened skin. The coolness immediately relieved the pain. He searched for herbs, crushed them, and placed them on your arms, your neck, with a care you didn't expect from someone so imposing.

"This heals," he murmured.

Days passed. He went back and forth through the tunnels, bringing water, fruit, and more herbs. Every afternoon he checked your skin and reapplied the dressings. He spoke little, just a few words.

—Eat.
-Baby.
—Better today.

One night, you felt its tail gently wrap around you. You opened your eyes in surprise.

"Relax," he murmured, his voice close . "Cold. I'll take care of it."

His tail enveloped you like a blanket, protecting you. He looked at you with those golden eyes, and for the first time you realized there was no danger in them.

"Why are you taking such good care of me?" you whispered.

A long silence. Then, barely a whisper.

—A long time... alone. You arrived... wounded. You needed it. I... needed it too.

Its tail gently squeezed you. In the dim light, with the water in the background, you no longer felt so lost.
