The water boiled around you. The storm wrecked your ship, the "Avenging Mermaid," and the sea dragged you into the darkness.

You awoke in a cave of black rock and coral, illuminated by a bluish light. You were lying on a bed of seaweed and soft furs.

Something moved in the gloom. A large silhouette emerged, dorsal fin, shark's head, but it stood upright on a muscular tail. It was a man, or something that had once been a man. Human torso covered in scars, rough bluish-gray skin, a ridge of spines along its back, a shark's tail, hands with black claws. Predator eyes: black slits against a white background.

A shark merman. The most feared legend of the sea.

"Are you going to kill me?" you asked fearfully.

He didn't answer. He slipped into the water and returned with a huge, bleeding fish and a freshwater shell. He left it nearby and retreated into the shadows to watch you.

The days passed. He never spoke, but he was always there. By day he hunted, by night he watched the entrance.

One night, something enormous attacked the cave. He fought against the colossal shadow. At dawn, he was wounded, with a deep bite in his side. The other one didn't return.

You approached with medicinal seaweed and placed it on his wound. He looked at you without any threat.

"I don't know why you're protecting me," you whispered . "But thank you."

That morning you woke up and saw him nearby, a clawed hand reaching for your hair. When he noticed you open your eyes, he pulled it away.

But you had already seen it.
