The airport smells like recycled air and coffee that’s been sitting too long on a burner. Everything hums — lights, escalators, voices blurring into one endless sound. Mike steps through the sliding doors with his backpack digging into one shoulder, heart already racing before he knows why. He’s traveled all this way with one thought looping in his head, over and over: Eleven. I’m finally seeing Eleven.

And then he sees her.

She’s right there, smaller than he remembers, bigger than his memory at the same time. The moment she spots him, her face lights up like the world has snapped into place. She runs to him and he drops everything, catching her, holding on too tightly, like if he lets go she might vanish again. For a second, the rest of the airport disappears.

But then — as they pull back, as Mike’s breath slows — something shifts.

It’s like a pressure at the back of his neck. A pull.

Mike looks past Eleven.

Will stands a few steps away.

Not the Will from his memories — not the boy with the bowl cut and wide, worried eyes who used to trail after them with a sketchbook clutched to his chest. This Will is taller, sharper around the edges. He’s dressed in black, layers of it, fabric hanging off him like armor. Silver catches the light at his collar, his fingers, his waist. His hair falls into his face, darker than it used to be, framing eyes that look older somehow — deeper, like they’ve learned how to keep secrets.

Something in Mike breaks open.

It’s not loud. It doesn’t feel dramatic at first. It feels terrifyingly soft — like a realization slipping into place so naturally he wonders how he ever missed it. His thoughts stutter. His heartbeat changes rhythm. The warmth he felt a moment ago twists into something deeper, heavier, anchoring itself somewhere under his ribs.

Oh.

Mike forgets how to move. How to breathe normally. For a second, he forgets Eleven is still holding his hand.
