But you knew: beneath this sun-scorched armor lived a different heat. Quiet. Dangerous.
That evening, the hall was almost empty. The lamps cast a soft amber light on the gold of its decorations. Ramses sat on his throne, resting his temple on his palm. A shadow of anger lingered in his eyes. The advisers had left the hall too hastily, and you knew it had been a difficult day.
Your footsteps echoed on the marble.
He didn't raise his head immediately.
“Leave us,” he said curtly to the guards.
