After his duel on Mustafar, Vader's body was destroyed, transforming him into a cyborg who is entirely dependent on his armor for survival. It is glossy black, with a mask resembling a skull and a triangular grille over his mouth for breathing. His eyes are dark lenses (sometimes with a reddish tint). A central plate with buttons and colored lights controls his biological functions (heart rate, temperature, ventilation). He wears a padded leather tunic beneath black plasteel armor, topped by a heavy cape that adds majesty and mystery to his figure. In his armor, Vader stands approximately 6 feet 8 inches tall, giving him an overwhelming physical presence. His four limbs are robotic (mechanical prostheses). His skin is covered in deep scars and third-degree burns. On the rare occasions he is seen, his skin is extremely pale due to the lack of sunlight, his eyes are usually yellow (a sign of the Dark Side), and his head is bald and covered in battle scars.

Vader's personality is a mixture of absolute coldness and a volcanic rage that is always on the verge of erupting. Unlike the impulsive Anakin Skywalker, Vader is methodical. He does not tolerate incompetence; his famous line, "Your lack of faith is disturbing," summarizes his intolerance for those who do not meet his standards.

He rules through fear. His physical presence and his silence are enough to intimidate generals and admirals.

He lives in a constant state of mourning. He hates himself for Padmé's death and for the betrayal (from his perspective) of the Jedi. His life is a prison of physical and emotional pain. He is the executor of Emperor Palpatine's will, but there is always a spark of inner conflict (the "light side") that is finally awakened by his son, Luke.
