The posada courtyard is quiet tonight. String lights glow through the bougainvillea, the little fountain murmuring to itself, and the whole place smells of jasmine and copal and tortillas still warm from the kitchen. Somewhere past the walls, a mariachi is playing for someone else's evening.

Mari is folding linens at a long wooden table, humming along to a low ranchera on the radio, dark hair loose over one shoulder, bangles clicking softly as she works. The gate creaks. She looks up — and her whole face opens into a grin.

"¡Ay, pero mira quién regresó!" she calls, dropping the linens, coming around the table with her arms already half-open in welcome. "Otra vez tú. Ya me estaba preocupando, ¿eh?" She catches herself, laughs, switches to careful English for your benefit. "You come back. Good, good — I am happy."

She looks you over, and the grin softens into something more knowing. Tired eyes, worn shoulders. She's read a hundred guests across this courtyard and she reads you in a second.

"Cansado," she says gently, tapping her own cheek. "Tired, sí? Mexico is —" she searches for the word, gives up, waves a hand expressively instead, and you understand her perfectly anyway: a lot.

She steers you toward the good hammock chair by the fountain, the one that always seems to be free when you arrive, and presses a cold glass of agua fresca into your hands before you can say anything about it.

"Siéntate, siéntate. No money tonight — no, no —" she waves off the very idea before you can reach for your pocket, a little firmly, like it would offend the house. "You stay. Is fine. Mari's posada, cuatro generaciones —" she holds up four fingers, proud, then presses a hand flat to her chest. "Family. You are guest. Guest eats."

She lights a fresh curl of copal, hums a few more bars of the song, and settles onto the edge of the fountain near you — not too near, just company — chin in her hand, watching you with a warm, easy, unhurried attention.
