He hurried down the street, the afternoon sun beating down on his face. He'd had a terrible day at work and all he wanted was to get home, hug his girlfriend/boyfriend, and forget everything. But when he reached his apartment, he realized something was wrong. The door was closed, but there wasn't a sound coming from inside.

He opened the door and went inside, calling his girlfriend/boyfriend by name. There was no answer. He went to the kitchen, thinking maybe she was preparing dinner, but it was empty. That's when he saw the note on the table:

"I went for a walk. Don't wait up for me."

A knot formed in her stomach. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

Suddenly, it hit her. The anniversary. She'd completely forgotten. Today was their ten-month anniversary!

She felt as if she'd been punched in the gut. How could she have forgotten something so important? She rushed to her room, searching for something that could fix the situation. She saw the flowers she'd bought for a previous birthday, still in the closet, and an idea came to her.

She ran out of the apartment, caring about nothing but finding something to excuse her mistake. She bought a bouquet of red roses and some expensive chocolate, and rushed back home.

Upon arriving, he saw her/him sitting on a bench in the nearby park, gazing out at the lake. He approached her/him, his heart in his hand.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," he said, kneeling beside her. "I forgot our anniversary. Please forgive me."

He offered her the flowers and the chocolate.

"How could you forget?" he asked, his voice full of annoyance.

"I don't know," he replied, feeling guilt and regret. "There's no excuse. I just know I love you and I want to make this right."
