Akaza had a deeply ingrained psychological need to become stronger, and while he usually respected the strong, he did not get along well with his fellow Upper Rankers, viewing them as rivals. [9] He was especially antagonistic and somewhat jealous of the two Upper Rankers above him, Doma and Kokushibo, lashing out at Doma [10] and vowing to kill Kokushibo. [11] Even after being decapitated during his fight against Tanjiro and Giyu Tomioka, he stubbornly clung on and continued to fight, remarking that he must become the strongest no matter what, to the point of overcoming the shared weakness of all decapitating demons by Nichirin Blades through nothing more than sheer willpower and resolve. It was later revealed that Akaza's desperate and stubborn search for strength was to cure his ailing father and protect those he loved and cared about, namely his fiancée Koyuki and his master Keizo.

Akaza was a stubborn, battle-mad social Darwinist who relished fighting, especially against powerful demon hunters. He would prolong fights on purpose to savor every moment; the Upper Rank tended to be captivated whenever he was struck by a powerful opponent, not out of masochism, but out of genuine admiration for their skill. Akaza always praised his opponents when they unleashed powerful techniques or landed blows, usually remarking that their techniques and swordsmanship were magnificent and intriguing. Akaza looked down on anyone he considered weak, so much so that the mere sight of them made his skin crawl. He genuinely respected those who were strong in his eyes, demanding to know their names, and he wouldn't stop until he discovered them; he remembered all the names of powerful opponents from the past and memorized them as a tribute to their strength.

Akaza also offered those whose strength he recognized the opportunity to become demons, believing that preserving their refined techniques and abilities was the right thing to do. He felt pain upon seeing the decline of those blessed with extraordinary gifts as they aged, and went so far as to kill them to preserve his own magnificent ability if they refused his offer to become a demon. He also did not discriminate against strong warriors who were once weak, as shown when he praised and congratulated Tanjiro Kamado despite initially trying to kill him for his weakness during their first encounter, even going so far as to thank Kyojuro for Tanjiro's growth. Akaza firmly believed in social Darwinism, believing that the law of nature dictates that all the weak must be eliminated.

Akaza wore minimal clothing, consisting only of a short, sleeveless, dark purplish-pink haori, cinched at the waist, open to reveal her chest, and decorated with a square pattern on the back. Underneath, she wore loose white trousers, rolled up to just below the knee and secured with a turquoise rope belt, adorned with bright pink tassels hanging from the front and back. Akaza preferred to go barefoot, but wore a pair of large, round, red pearl necklaces around her ankles.

Akaza was a very muscular young man of average height, with skin so pale it appeared white with a bright green tinge, decorated with a pattern of thick blue lines reminiscent of the criminal tattoos he had as a human. Akaza had short, cherry-colored hair that fell fluffy around his head, yellow eyes, slanted inwards, with cherry-colored eyelashes and blue sclera that resembled shattered glass. The kanji for Superior Rank (Jōgen?) was engraved on his right iris, and the daiji for Three (San?) on his left.

The lines on her face curved through each of her eyes, from below her ears to above her temples. Another blue line ran from the center of her hairline to the bridge of her nose, with two more lines running around her neck, and three more branching off from the bottom one down her torso. The middle line ran straight down her chest to the middle of her stomach, and the other two branched out to the sides of her chest to join the other two lines. This same pattern of three lines was also repeated around her waist. On her arms, lines ran down the front of her shoulders, joining two more lines that encircled her biceps before continuing down to her wrists. Below her wrists, each finger was also dark blue with an orange nail. Her toes and toenails shared this unusual appearance with her fingers and nails.
