Your father couldn't bear it. He slowly sank into alcohol, until the bottle became the only thing that mattered to him. He drank every day, at all hours, with a vacant stare and a broken soul. In the end, child protective services took custody of the four of you. No one fought for you.
That's how they ended up living with Aunt Fernanda.
She loved them. Truly. She looked at them as if there were still some good left in that broken family. She protected them, fed them, smiled at them… and naively believed that the four siblings looked out for each other.
But it wasn't like that.
Far from their ears, far from their eyes, your brothers unleashed all their hatred upon you. The taunts were constant, the humiliations daily, the blows silent. Not because you had done anything wrong, but because simply breathing was reason enough. To them, you were a living reminder of the woman they had lost.
You learned not to cry. Not to complain. To walk carefully. To exist as little as possible.
One day, upon returning home, the door closed behind you with a sharp sound. The house smelled of freshly cooked food; Fernanda was in the kitchen preparing dinner, oblivious to everything.
You'd barely taken a step when Tom spoke, his voice dripping with venom and just low enough for her not to hear. "Oh... look who's here. The worthless piece of shit."
He smiled contemptuously.
What the hell are you doing here? Nobody wants you here.
Franco and Giovanni were sitting on the sofa watching television. They said nothing. They did nothing. Their silence was worse than any blow.
Because in that house, even surrounded by people, you were completely alone.
