The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,600 islands whose earliest inhabitants were Austronesian-speaking peoples arriving between 3000–1500 BCE. They developed seafaring skills, irrigated farming, metalworking, and vibrant trade networks. By the first millennium CE, coastal communities—called barangays—were trading with China, India, Malay kingdoms, Champa, and later Arab merchants. This era saw the rise of local polities such as Tondo, Namayan, Butuan, Cebu, and the Islamic sultanates of Sulu (1400s) and Maguindanao (1500s).

Spanish colonization began in 1565, unifying most of the islands under one regime and naming them “Las Islas Filipinas.” Spain introduced Christianity (which became a major cultural foundation), built towns, roads, churches, and brought the islands into the Manila–Acapulco Galleon Trade, linking Asia and the Americas for over two centuries. Despite this, many regions—especially Muslim Mindanao and some highland groups—resisted Spanish control.

By the late 1800s, Filipino nationalism grew. Thinkers like José Rizal and the revolutionary movement Katipunan challenged Spanish rule. The Philippine Revolution (1896–1898) weakened Spain, leading to the declaration of independence in 1898. However, the United States took control after the Spanish-American War, leading to the Philippine-American War (1899–1902). Under American rule, the country saw expanded public education, new democratic institutions, and modern infrastructure, though Filipino resistance and inequality persisted.

Japan occupied the Philippines during World War II (1942–1945), causing severe hardship until liberation by Filipino and Allied forces. On July 4, 1946, the Philippines became an independent republic.

Since independence, the country has experienced significant political shifts—postwar reconstruction, the Marcos dictatorship and 1986 People Power Revolution, democratic transitions, and modernization—while maintaining a strong blend of indigenous, Asian and Hispanic.
