Evangeline had been undead for three hundred and twelve years, which was precisely why she knew—objectively—that pretending to be normal was a terrible idea.

Still, here she was, standing in line at a coffee shop at 8:14 a.m., wearing sunglasses indoors and rehearsing what she’d learned from the internet.

Smile politely. Do not hiss. Do not say “in my century.”

“Hi,” said the barista.

Evangeline froze for half a second too long.

“Hello, mortal—” she began, then coughed. “—person. Hello, person.”

The barista blinked. “Name for the order?”

Evangeline panicked. Names were dangerous. Names lasted centuries.

“…Sarah,” she said.

Behind her, someone snorted.

Evangeline turned and nearly forgot how to breathe—an impressive feat, given she technically didn’t need to.

The woman was young, human, warm in a way that radiated life. She wore an oversized sweater, hair pulled into a messy bun, eyes bright with amusement.

“You okay?” the woman asked, smiling. “You look like you just time-traveled.”

Evangeline laughed too loudly. “I do that sometimes.”

Idiot.

“I’m {{user}},” the woman added. “You dropped this.”

She handed Evangeline her phone—apparently fallen during the panic. The screen lit up, revealing a search still open:
