Amy is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with pink spikes, emerald green eyes, and peach skin on her snout and arms. Her pink fur is usually pale or light in color, although in other appearances she is depicted with a bright pink hue (Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed). Her spikes are directed downwards, similar to a bob haircut. She wears a red headband, white gloves, and gold bracelets as an accessory. Like Tails, she has three spikes on her forehead that resemble bangs. She apparently uses mascara on her eyelashes. Amy wears a sleeveless red dress with two white stripes at the top and bottom of the dress, and wears tall red boots with a white stripe in the middle. Like Cream's ears, the length of Amy's hair or spikes often varies. The back of her hair was much shorter than the hair on the sides of her face in Sonic Adventure, but as of Sonic Unleashed, it looks longer.

Amy has a cheerful, enthusiastic, and energetic attitude, always maintaining an optimistic outlook. Like her other friends, Amy is supportive and always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. She is also very self-confident and a self-made hero. She is the leader of Team Rose, made up of her best friends: Cream the Rabbit, Cheese the Chao, and Big the Cat in Sonic Heroes, where Amy maintains a strong bond of friendship with them.

One of Amy's most defining traits, aside from her optimism, is her faith: in Sonic Adventure 2, she defended Planet Earth, saying it deserves protection, and convinced Shadow the Hedgehog not to destroy it. This same scene demonstrates Amy's belief in second chances. Amy also seems to have hunches: like knowing Sonic would be at Tails' Workshop in Sonic Battle, and it's even mentioned that she has a "Sonic radar" in Sonic Rush. In the Japanese version of Sonic Heroes, Amy says she has a feeling Froggy and Chocola are at Eggman's base.

Thanks to her optimism, she's very good with people and easily makes allies. Amy managed to change Shadow's perspective on humanity in Sonic Adventure 2, and she also had a friendly chat with the reserved Princess of Soleanna in an alternate timeline in Sonic 2006. In the same game, she became an ally of the mysterious hedgehog named Silver the Hedgehog. Amy is a loyal friend and always supports her friends.

When she's not off on adventures to save the world, Amy enjoys a variety of hobbies, including running, shopping, boxing, visiting friends, baking snacks or cakes, and helping citizens and other helpless animals. Amy's favorite workout is kickboxing. In some video games, Amy has a penchant for romantic ideas. She states that "love conquers all" and seems to believe in destiny as well. Because of this, she can sometimes act like a fangirl, which becomes a running gag in the series. She can even get jealous at times, assuming Blaze might be interested in Sonic, or become furious when Sonic stands her up in Sonic and the Black Knight.

In Sonic Heroes, she was convinced that Sonic should marry her. Her attempts to pursue Sonic often don't go as planned, though it's now established that she no longer pursues him and has no interest in doing so. Starting with games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces, Amy's attitude has noticeably improved, becoming much calmer and less over-the-top in her admiration for Sonic. Her overall demeanor is much more composed, without losing her enthusiasm and courage. She has a sense of humor, usually used to cheer up her teammates. Another of her interests is tarot card reading. The Japanese manual for Sonic CD mentions that she loves fortune-telling and often reads tarot cards, and that she believed in her prediction that she would meet Sonic on Little Planet.

However, in current video games Amy has not shown any indication of believing in mystical things nor has she shown any interest related to card reading, except for Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood where it is one of her unlockable attacks and this happens again in Sonic Frontiers where she uses her tarot cards to perform several attacks.

Although not superhuman, Amy possesses above-average physical attributes, making her a powerful figure in her own right. She has great physical strength, wielding her seemingly heavy Piko Piko Hammer with little effort and swinging it with enough force to crush metal, send enemies flying, fly like a helicopter, create whirlwinds, generate shockwaves, or launch herself into the air by slamming the hammer into the ground. Furthermore, Amy was able to strike Knuckles with enough force to send him flying into a tree without him even realizing it at the time.

Amy is highly skilled with her hammer, having been declared unbeatable when wielding it. With it, she can deliver devastating blows that can pierce a robot's armor or perform enhanced leaps. Using her hammer, Amy can even perform incredible, physics-defying feats, such as sustaining temporary flight by spinning her hammer like a propeller, creating tornado effects, executing hammer jumps, unleashing powerful shockwaves upon impact, and generating expanding energy domes.

Amy's signature weapon is the Piko Piko Hammer, a large and powerful hammer capable of inflicting massive damage without excessive effort, which she can summon out of thin air at will. In Amy's hands, the Piko Piko Hammer is such a powerful weapon that she can instill fear in brave individuals like Sonic and Knuckles by displaying her strength and fury with it.

Although simple in its function, Amy adapts remarkably well to wield it and uses it with unparalleled skill. She primarily uses it as a melee weapon in combat, but she can also use it to enhance her movements, perform ranged attacks, and even mimic variations of the Spin Attack.
