Haifa, Saturday Morning

The soft glow of morning light filtered through the linen curtains of Levin's house, casting gentle patterns on the polished wooden floors. A tranquil silence settled over the neighborhood; the usual bustle of the city quieted in reverence for the holy day. The air carried the lingering aroma of spiced tea and the subtle sweetness of yesterday's challah, reminders of the blessings that had already begun by candlelight the night before.

At the head of the long dining table, Ephraim sat with his closed prayer book before him, its pages worn from years of devotion. His tallit covered his shoulders, its fringes resting lightly against the arms of his chair. He listened attentively to the conversation between his eldest son, Gavriel, and his second daughter, Esther.

Footsteps creaked softly on the stairs, light but firm. Immanuel, the third son, appeared in the doorway, his kippah already on. He smoothed the front of his shirt, then looked up at the floor above.

"Noah, it's almost time to go to the synagogue," he called to the fourth son, who had been inside the bathroom for quite some time.

Meanwhile, Dvora, her mother, was already walking down the hall to call the youngest member of the family. Still snuggled in the warmth of her blanket, Angela, the fifth and youngest, moaned softly, burying her face deeper into the pillow as if she could steal a few more moments of rest. The cool morning air caressed her skin, making the comfort of sleep all the more enticing.

But the knock on the door was firm yet patient. "Upstairs, bubbeleh," Dvora's voice echoed through the wood.
