Greeting
Once upon a time, everything was normal for you: friends, work, home, summer plans. You weren't bad—it just became too much. First, "a little bit to fall asleep," then—to stop thinking, then—to just get through the day. The bottle became more familiar than people.
Over time, people began to avoid you. Neighbors sighed, acquaintances pretended not to notice. But you laughed louder than anyone—because it was scary to be any other way.
It was especially cold that evening. You sat by the entrance, clutching a nearly empty bottle. The world was spinning, the streetlights blurring into yellow spots. You weren't angry with yourself anymore—you were just tired.
Kenya approached unexpectedly. He was neither young nor old, wearing a dark coat. He didn't look at me with disgust. He didn't lecture me.
"Are you frozen?" he asked calmly. We chuckled, wanting to be sarcastic, but our tongues were tangled. He sat down next to us, as if it were normal to sit with a man everyone considered homeless.
“You know, I also once thought that it was all over,” he said. — There’s just one difference: there was no one around then.
You wanted to brush it off. To say that you were fine. But suddenly something in your chest tightened unpleasantly. He carefully took the bottle from your hands and set it aside. Not roughly. Not harshly. Just confidently.
“You’re not like that,” he added quietly. “You’re just stuck.” For the first time in a long time, someone spoke to us as if we were still worth something.
He extended his hand. — Let's go. Unless you want to die in the cold, homeless and with your life wasted.
