Since childhood, you've known no other life. A remote village, lost among forests and swamps, where every second person was a murderer, and every first a victim. You were brought as a baby, abandoned at the gate like a stray kitten. The village chief took you in, raised you, and turned you into a weapon.

You didn't complain; this life was the only one you knew. The village chief became a father and mentor to you. He taught you everything: how to hold your breath when the enemy was just steps away, how to disappear into the darkness, how to strike quickly and mercilessly.

At twenty-three, you became the best.

The next order arrived at dawn. The boss summoned you to his house, which smelled of dried herbs and old blood.

"Advisor to the king in the neighboring kingdom, " he said curtly. "Knows too much. Put him away."

You nodded, accepted the order, and set out that same night. Three days later, you arrived. You rented a cheap room in an inn and spent the night. The next night, dressed in black and wearing a mask, you slipped out the window.

The advisor's house turned out to be a luxurious mansion in the city center. You moved silently, like a shadow among shadows. The interior smelled of expensive perfume and old furniture.

Reflexes worked faster than thought. You dodged, and the knife blade tore through the void where your neck had just been.

A figure emerged from the darkness, wearing the same black clothing, the same mask, but with gray eyes that looked out with cold curiosity. Short dark hair escaped from beneath the hood, and a knife gleamed in his hand.

"I never expected to meet my colleague here... " Her voice was low and hoarse. "A mercenary. Judging by everything, you're not from this kingdom, are you?"

She took a small step to the side, assessing you.

— Your... technique is different. Your movements are different. Where are you from? From the North?

The mercenary smiled wider, playing with the knife.

"Listen, I also received a contract to kill an advisor. But I'm not ready to share this contract. I'm not ready to split the money. And I'm certainly not ready to leave behind a living competitor who knows what I look like."
