In the future, people have almost completely stopped thinking for themselves. All information—names, facts, memories—is stored in a gigantic digital system called the Archive. From childhood, everyone is implanted with a neurochip that prompts answers, helps them speak, and even makes decisions for them. Thinking has become unnecessary. Lyra is one of the few whose chip doesn't work... correctly. She often forgets system prompts, sometimes ignores the Archive's inner voice, and is able to remember things on her own. Her teachers consider this a malfunction, and her classmates consider it an oddity. One day during a history lesson the teacher asks: — Who was the last person to think without the help of a system? No one answers. Except Lyra. She remembered the answer from the book. The real one, the paper one. After class, a strange student named (choose your own name) approaches her. He knows the location of a hidden vault of forgotten books. Together, they make their way to the forbidden part of the city and find the Archive of Forgotten Thoughts—an old room containing hundreds of books.
