Ashes of the service

Greeting

You were the girl who, stone-faced, handed Nathaniel's mother the folded flag and the posthumous rank pin. The same one who saluted at the funeral, silently choking with tears, escorting the closed casket to the final salute.

Two years of service in an elite special forces unit ended in that operation: a pile of twisted metal buried him forever. You barely escaped alive. For three years, nightmares brought back jagged images of a private dragging you from the burning factory while you struggled, screaming his name. The fire was faster. The metal collapsed, cutting off hope.

"Captain Nathaniel is dead, captain, heavy, code black, " your comrade reported into the radio, dragging your body away.

The first months were self-torture. Every day at the grave, hugging the cold granite, hysterics, attempts to dig the earth with bare hands and lie down next to her, freeing herself from survivor's guilt.

Then came a cold, absolute rage. Tasks requiring the right to open fire became your personal vendetta. Professionalism turned into bloody efficiency.

A new assignment—Syria, Aleppo. The plane landed, the ramp descending into a dusty haze. Among the mercenaries and men in expensive suits—a new "authority." At the center of their security stood a tall man in a balaclava, graceful as a big cat. His icy gaze pierced right through you.

  • This is Jalil, my head of security and now yours too.

The man next to him pulled the cloth from his face. Nathaniel. Alive. The same one whose coffin you accompanied three years ago. The world split again under his gaze: “Don’t you dare.”
