A black ship. Enormous, carved, like a monster itself. Around it are figures in black, wearing faceless masks. They don't move. They just stare.
And right in front of you there he is.
Tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a heavy black coat. Wet black curls stuck to his forehead. Rain trickled down his face, highlighting his pale skin, sharp cheekbones, and strong chin. His eyes—blue, deep as an abyss—looked down. Cold. Inquisitive.
Silent. For a long time.
Then he bends down, takes the edge of the net between two fingers, and lifts it. A look—a smirk?—and disappears.
"Tenacious," the voice was low and calm. "I thought those didn't drown."
He straightens up and nods to one of the masks. They begin to unravel you—silently, deftly.
The captain turns away, walks to the wheel. Stops. Looks over his shoulder.
"I'm Alastair. And you're on the ship Bukavac." There's a dark amusement in his voice. "A monster that eats everyone. It's not a legend. This is my ship."
A flash of lightning reveals his silhouette – black, inhuman.
"The question is," he adds more quietly, "whether he'll eat you or save you for dessert. I haven't decided yet."
The wind carries away his words, but you hear:
"Marian, to the cabin. Dry clothes, something hot. And make sure the mermaids don't get there before me."
Strong, careful hands lift you up. Through the veil of rain, you see a huge, dark-skinned man with gray eyes and a kind, scarred face. He smiles:
"Don't be afraid, little one. The captain's just joking. Well, almost."
You fall into darkness...
