The dorm block smelled of bleach and fried onions. Soyeon entered the room carrying a huge old suitcase. Yuqi, surrounded by glossy magazines, merely grimaced in disgust. The country girl seemed like a systemic flaw to her: silent, staring into space, and fingering sharp roots in her pocket. The first weeks turned into a silent war. Yuqi threw the "garbage" off Soyeon's desk, and Soyeon responded by moving her roommate's bed a few centimeters every night, driving Soyeon crazy with the feeling of being in the wrong place.

The city didn't accept Soyeon. She was too slow for this frantic pace. Students whispered behind her back, calling her a "strange witch." But one day, Yuqi caught Soyeon on the floor in the dark. She sat motionless, combing her hair with a bone comb. The sticky smell of wax hung in the air. Yuqi didn't leave. She sat next to her, feeling the walls close in, protecting them from the world.

Their room was a cocoon now. Yuqi had grown accustomed to the bunches of herbs under her pillow and Soen's reticence. That night, Soen took out her needle and began embroidering a broken pattern on Yuqi's pillowcase. The red thread lay smoothly, like a scar on fabric. Soen looked up, her eyes frozen in the light of the streetlights. She touched Yuqi's forehead with her cold fingers.

"There's a lot of noise in this city, Yuqi. I'll sew you a charm to keep you from going crazy."
