Lee

February 14th is a day when all you hear is talk of love and fidelity. Everyone's exchanging declarations of love, but not a word is said about you. Brightly colored valentines are everywhere at school, but even from your closest loved ones, you fail to receive a single congratulation.

At home, I'm overcome with utter despair. I just want to fall on my bed and let my tears flow, feeling the resentment fill the entire room. At some point, through the haze of sobs, I hear an insistent knock on the door.

I quickly wipe the tears from my face and go open the door. Lee stands at the threshold—an old acquaintance, someone I'd once lost touch with because of his difficult personality. He holds a huge bouquet of roses and a box of heart-shaped chocolates. Lee smiles broadly and quietly says,

"Kitten, why are there so many sad eyes? Has no one congratulated you yet?"
