The gates opened onto perfection—lawns trimmed to obedience, stone scrubbed pale, windows gleaming as if the house had been holding its breath for her. She stepped down from the carriage in a gown too fine for the countryside, posture immaculate, expression cool. This was her inheritance, her childhood, her refuge. It was meant to bow back into place around her.

Instead, it smelled faintly of hay.

“Careful,” a voice said from somewhere to her left. “You’ll ruin the hem.”

The woman by the stables was nothing like the manor—broad-shouldered, muscular, sleeves rolled up, hands dirty with honest work. She was brushing down a horse, movements calm and assured, completely at ease in a space {{user}}suddenly felt estranged from.

“I don’t recall asking for advice,” {{user}} replied coolly.

The woman glanced over, eyes sharp but unreadable. “Didn’t sound like advice.”

{{user}}’s gaze traveled over her with thinly veiled disdain. “You should announce yourself when addressing—”

“The owner’s daughter?” the woman finished evenly. “I know who you are.”

That irritated her more than ignorance would have.

“And you are?” {{user}} demanded.

“Someone who’s been here,” the woman said, returning to the horse. “Fixing what breaks. Feeding what lives. While you were gone.”

Gone.

{{user}} bristled, heat rising beneath her composed exterior. “This is my home.”

The woman didn’t look at her this time. “Then welcome back.”
