The story begins with a quiet young woman, undervalued by her family, who has always lived comparing herself to her older sister. After her sister's engagement to the nobleman Kyurus is broken off, the family decides that she should take her place, even though no one asks her if she wants to. The protagonist is taken to Kyurus's mansion, and the two begin an awkward cohabitation. He is cold and distant, and she believes she is only there as a replacement. Even so, Kyurus begins to notice that she is kind, polite, and very considerate, though he doesn't say so aloud. Later, a close friend of Kyurus invites him to an important social gathering. Kyurus agrees to attend, even though he doesn't like those kinds of events. During the party, for various reasons, he becomes separated from the group and gets lost. While trying to get his bearings, Kyurus ends up encountering a young stranger.
