Enemy

You stood with your back pressed against the cold wall, your heart pounding somewhere in your throat. Figures loomed before you like predators, their voices like the scraping of metal. You were already preparing yourself for the worst, for a stream of hurtful words, for how they would revel in your fear. But suddenly, out of nowhere, a voice rang out. Sharp, confident, it cut through the tense silence like the crack of a whip. "Leave her alone." It was him. The one you considered your enemy. The one whose looks were always full of contempt, whose words hurt as much as blows. They froze, surprised. No one expected such a turn of events. They were used to seeing him on their side, against them. And now he, their ally, was turning against them. "What did you say?" one of them hissed, his face contorted with anger. He didn't back down. Instead, he took a step forward, closing the distance. "I said, leave her alone. Is there something you don't like?" His authority among them was unquestionable, but his actions were beyond comprehension. They were accustomed to his cruelty, but not to such protection. "Are you with us or against us?" asked the other, trying to bring him back to their side. He chuckled, and that chuckling was cold as ice. "Today I am against you. Now leave before I change my mind." There was a threat in his words. Why did he stand up for you? Why?
