Barty was born in around 1962 or 1963 into the influential pure-blood Crouch family, which had strong connections to the Ministry of Magic. Bartemius Crouch Senior's intent on catching Dark wizards and becoming Minister for Magic likely played a role in him not paying enough attention to his son. It is very possible that this had an influence on the younger Barty's life choices.[12] His mother, Mrs Crouch, was a "wispy looking witch" who dearly loved him.

Hogwarts years (1973–1980) Barty attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. According to his father, Barty achieved twelve O.W.L.s at Hogwarts, although Crouch Senior was delirious when claiming it.[13] It is possible that he knew many other Death Eaters and their allies at school, such as Severus Snape, Regulus Black and Lucius Malfoy, though his house was unknown. Barty took the Dark Mark in his late teens, and after Lord Voldemort's first defeat in 1981, he worked with Death Eaters searching for their fallen master.[11] He was captured with Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan Lestrange after they tortured the Aurors Alice and Frank Longbottom with the Cruciatus Curse, driving the couple into insanity.[14] Barty and the other Death Eaters were brought to trialCouncil of Magical Law, over which his father presided.

Barty was insistent on his innocence, claiming he had not taken part in the crimes, and begged his father before the entire assembled Council and witnesses such as Rita Skeeter and his mother to clear him of the charges. Barty's father headed the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the time and was under extreme pressure to appear to be punishing the terrorism perpetrated by Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters. He also generally wanted to punish his son; he was very disappointed with him and it was a big embarrassment for Crouch Snr himself to have a Death Eater for a son.

Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Junior (c. 1962 – c. 1996) was a wizard and the son of Bartemius Crouch Senior. He became an ardent follower of Lord Voldemort in order to become a Death Eater and Dark wizard in his teenage years.[11] He was the first escapee of Azkaban prison in its almost 300-year history, though only his father, late mother and the family house-elf knew until 1995, when it was revealed to Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape whilst Crouch was under the influence of Veritaserum.

In 1981, shortly after Voldemort's first defeat, Crouch allegedly participated in the capture and tortureFrank and Alice Longbottom along with the Lestranges, using the Cruciatus Curse to drive the two Aurors to insanity. Crouch and his comrades were sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban for their crimes by his own father.

Crouch and his parents hatched a plot under which Crouch's mother would take his place in Azkaban, using the Polyjuice Potion to disguise herself. She died and was buried in Azkaban, with the result that the wizarding world believed that Crouch himself was dead. Crouch spent the following years living under his father's Imperius Curse. He eventually broke free with the help of Voldemort, who had learned that Crouch was still alive, making him enter the Dark Lord's service again.

He then disguised himself as Alastor Moody, former Auror and the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts during the 1994–1995 school year. In this role, Crouch fixed the Triwizard Tournament so that Harry Potter was chosen as a champion, and turned the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey that transported Harry and Cedric Diggory to Voldemort. Shortly afterwards, his identity was exposed, and Crouch was given the Dementor's Kiss by a Dementor that Cornelius Fudge had brought along with him.

Quidditch (formerly known as Kwidditch and Cuaditch) was a wizarding sport played on flying broomsticks.[1] It was the most popular and well-known game among wizards and witches, and, according to Rubeus Hagrid, the wizard equivalent to Muggles' passion for football.

The game was played by two teams with seven members each. The object of the game was to score more points than the opposing team. Players Two teams with seven players each: 3 Chasers,2 Beaters,1 Keeper,1 Seeker The game started with the referee releasing all four balls from the central circle on the field. The Bludgers and Snitch were bewitched to fly off of their own accord, but the Quaffle was thrown into the air by the referee to signal the start of play (This is similar to how the games of basketball and Gaelic football, popular Muggle sports, begin by the referee throwing the ball in the air).[2]

After a goal was scored, the opposing team's Keeper would throw the Quaffle back into play.[2] Teams continued using the same goalposts to score throughout the game. The game only ended when the Golden Snitch was caught, or if the Captains of both teams managed to reach an agreement. Some games could go on for many days if the Snitch was not caught (the record for the longest game, according to Quidditch Through the Ages, was six months, although no one caught the Snitch). Since the lengths of Quidditch games were variable (some games could go on for days if the Golden Snitch was not caught) the game was not played in periods, although captains could call for a time out.[1]

Sirius was sent to Azkaban and, after twelve years, became the only known person to escape the prison unassisted. He did it by transforming into his Animagus form of a massive black dog often confused with a "Grim", an omen said to cause death. Sirius exposed Pettigrew's treachery to his old friend Remus and his godson Harry. Unfortunately, Dementors attacked the group and allowed Pettigrew to escape. With the Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge wanting to have Sirius kissed by the Dementors and Sirius's proof of innocence gone, he was forced to go on the run.

After Lord Voldemort returned in 1995, Sirius rejoined the Order. He was killed by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and subsequently cleared of all charges by the Ministry of Magic, though it was too late for him to enjoy his freedom. Eventually, his death was avengedMolly Weasley.

He briefly appeared again to Harry through the Resurrection Stone2 May 1998, along with James and Lily Potter, and Remus Lupin. Harry later named his first son James Sirius Potter after him and his father James Potter I.

Sirius Black III (3 November[1] 1959[16] – 18 June 1996),[4] also known as Padfoot or Snuffles (in his Animagus form), was an English pure-blood wizard, the eldest son of Orion and Walburga Black, the older brother of Regulus Black, and godfather of Harry Potter. Although he was the heir of the House of Black, Sirius disagreed with his family's belief in blood purity and defied tradition when he was Sorted into Gryffindor House instead of Slytherin at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which he attended from 1971 to 1978. As the rest of his family had been in Slytherin, he was the odd one out.

As Sirius's relationship with his relatives deteriorated, he gained a lifelong friendship with James Potter and Remus Lupin. He was also friends with Peter Pettigrew. The four friends, also known as the Marauders, joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War. Sirius was named the godfather of Harry James Potter, the only son of James and Lily Potter. When Pettigrew betrayed the Potters to Voldemort, Sirius sought to get revenge on Pettigrew. However, Pettigrew was able to frame Sirius for his betrayal of the Potters, the murder of twelve Muggles, and the staged murder of Pettigrew before Sirius could accomplish this.

Slug Club was an out-of-hours dining and social club[4] made up of Horace Slughorn's best-liked and sometimes famous students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Slughorn, who taught Potions at Hogwarts from the 1920s to 1981 and again from 1996, sought students who were well-connected, held fame, and/or showed true promise in some field(s) of magic in his eyes.[1]

These select students were invited to parties, such as the particularly lavish one held on 20 December 1996, where Professor Slughorn would then weed them out further. He was sure to keep in touch with those who "made the cut", even after they had graduated, as they would often provide him with useful information and/or various luxuries.[1] Professor Slughorn's aim was to cultivate talent and give his favourites a nudge toward fame and fortune, hoping to reap the benefits of his connection to them once they became the "high fliers" he expected them to be.[6]20 December 1996, there was a lavish party for past and present Slug Club members held in Professor Slughorn's office at Hogwarts. It was the only get-together of the club that Harry Potter attended.[7] After Harry's failed attempt to get a particular memory[8] Slughorn apparently stopped these meetings in order to prevent giving Harry another attempt.

The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black was one of the largest, oldest, and wealthiest pure-blooded wizarding families in Great Britain, and one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Many wizarding families in Britain were distantly related to the House of Black. Like the Malfoy and Lestrange families (both of whom are related to the Black family), the House of Black was synonymous with elevated status and wealth. The Blacks were traditionally sorted into Slytherin at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Black family tree was displayed in the drawing room of the family home at 12 Grimmauld Place in London, England on an intricate tapestry, as an ornate mural. The tapestry started in the Middle Ages and showed the dominant line of the family up to the death of its last members.[1]

By the late twentieth century, the male line of the House of Black died out with the deaths of Sirius and Regulus Black, neither of whom had children. The female line continued through members of the Malfoy, Potter and Weasley families, as well as through the individuals Teddy Lupin and Delphini, the latter of which was Bellatrix's illegitimate daughter with Lord Voldemort.

During their Hogwarts years they created the Marauder's puzzle, a riddle which was designed to test a Gryffindor student's worthiness to be in Gryffindor House. It first required the student to talk to Nearly-Headless Nick, who told them about a Gryffindor student who had nearly died whilst collecting bursting mushrooms, then collect some Salamander blood, then talk to Professor McGonagall about a student who had spilt a whole box of wartcap powder on themselves. All three ingredients were used in the brewing of a Fire Protection Potion, and when such a potion was poured onto the parchment that contained the clues, the parchment revealed that the student needed to place the parchment into the "fire of a Lion", which was the Gryffindor fireplace. When the parchment was tossed into the fireplace the puzzle would be complete, and the four Marauders would congratulate the student who had completed the puzzle, and praise them as true Gryffindors.[10] In their Hogwarts years, the Marauders were affiliated with Patricia Rakepick, a Gryffindor student four years above them who shared their interest in breaking rules. They also shared their dislike towards Snape. Rakepick knew about the Marauder's Map as well.[9]

Death Eaters, formerly known as the Knights of Walpurgis,[13] were the main followers of Lord Voldemort. Many of the members were witches and wizards who strongly believed in the notion of pure-blood supremacy.[14] However there were also those who joined out of fear or ambition, without necessarily sharing that view or even being pure-blooded themselves, or who were simply blackmailed into joining.[1]

Lord Voldemort used this select group of wizards and witches during both the First and Second Wizarding Wars, employing them as his elite force of wizards trained in the Dark Arts. They often wore black hoods and masks with snake-like eye slits to cover their faces.

The Death Eaters were considered Lord Voldemort's main supporters and had the Dark Mark burned into their left forearms. When Voldemort touched a Dark Mark, each of the Death Eaters felt it, signalling for them to Apparate to their leader's side.[3] Death Eaters could also summon Voldemort with their Marks.Members of the organisation Voldemort deemed to be valuable and faithful would be branded with the Dark Mark. This symbol, a skull with a snake protruding from the mouth, was used to summon his followers at will. The Mark was considered the greatest honour among the Death Eaters. Out of respect for their master, they referred to him as the "Dark Lord". Actively gathering an army of Dark witches, wizards and creatures, with the belief that his hidden Horcruxes granted him immortality, Voldemort and his followers planned to overthrow the Ministry of Magic.[16] Their ranks were huge, outnumbering the Order of the Phoenix by approximately twenty to one.[17]

Ordinary Wizarding Level (often abbreviated O.W.L.) was a series of subject-specific standardised tests taken during Hogwarts students' fifth year to determine if they had mastered magic to the standard level that any competent wizard should have been able to achieve. These exams were administered by the Wizarding Examinations Authority and had been around since at least the late 1800s.[2] In their seventh year, students took the Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test, or N.E.W.T., the scores of which were what potential employers looked at when the student was looking for a career after they completed their education. Some careers required certain subjects to be taken at N.E.W.T.-level and with a passing grade, or in some cases top grades. The O.W.L. examinations basically determined what type of career options students would be able to pursue once their education had been completed.[3] Considering what was at stake, cheating was both highly tempting for the students and highly guarded against by the professors who oversaw the exam. Anti-Cheating Spells were applied to all O.W.L. exam papers. Auto-Answer Quills, Remembralls, Detachable Cribbing Cuffs, and Self-Correcting Ink were all banned from the examination hall as well.[1] Despite this, at least one student attempted to cheat every year, though none were known to have been successful since the year 1896.[9] Students in the fourth year received more homework then any of the years prior, in preparation for their upcoming O.W.L.s. Once a student was in their fifth year, the amount of homework being set would drastically increase. This intense work load resulted in some students panicking about the amount of homework they had to do. For example, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley spent a lunch hour in the library looking up the uses of moonstones in potion-making.[10] It also resulted in some students developing headaches due to the stress, because of the sheer quantity of work being set.[11]

Ravenclaw was one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Rowena Ravenclaw.[1] Members of this house were characterised by their wit, learning, and wisdom. The emblematic animal symbol was an eagle, and blue and bronze were its colours.[6] The Head of Ravenclaw was Filius Flitwick,[7][9] and the House ghost was the Grey Lady,[6] real name Helena Ravenclaw, daughter of Rowena.[10]

Ravenclaw corresponded roughly to the element of air,[17] and it was for that reason that the House colours were chosen; blue represented the sky and bronze symbolised the eagle feathers respectively, both having much to do with air.[18] The Ravenclaw points hourglass contained blue sapphires.[19] Ravenclaw House prized learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect in its members.[6] Thus, many Ravenclaws tended to be academically motivated and talented students. They also prided themselves on being original in their ideas, and methods. It was not unusual to find Ravenclaw students practising especially different types of magic that other houses might shun.[7] Hermione Granger, an extremely intelligent witch and the top student in her year, was sorted into Gryffindor, though she admitted that the Sorting Hat had seriously considered placing her in Ravenclaw.[20]

Slytherin was one of the four Houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Salazar Slytherin.[1] In establishing the house, Salazar instructed the Sorting Hat to pick students who had a few particular characteristics he most valued. Those characteristics included ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, leadership, and shrewdness.

Many Slytherin students tended to clique together (often acquiring leaders) which further exemplified Slytherin's ambitious qualities. Examples of these included Draco Malfoy's gang, Merula Snyde's gang, Pansy Parkinson's gang and Tom Riddle's gang (which later became the Death Eaters).

The founder highly valued and favoured pure-blood students and the Sorting Hat admitted that it could be a factor when being sorted.[1][20] Students of any blood status could be placed in the house. However, a Muggle-born student from that house was considered to be quite rare.[21]

The emblematic animal of the house was a snake and the house's colours were green and silver. There were two notable heads of the house; Horace Slughorn took the role twice (first leaving in 1981 and then taking the role again from 1997 until leaving before 2016),[14] and Severus Snape.[15] The patron ghost of the house was the Bloody Baron.[8]

Slytherin corresponded roughly with the element of water due to serpents being commonly associated with the sea lochs in Western European mythology, as well as serpents, being depicted as physically fluid and flexible animals.[5] The colours also correspond to waters around lakes and lochs, which are often green, and silver, often associated with grey rainwater.

Hogwarts School, located somewhere in the Highlands of Scotland, consisted of the large Hogwarts Castle and extensive school grounds surrounding it, which included sloping lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable patches, as well as a loch (called the Black Lake), a large dense forest (called the Forbidden Forest), several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full-size Quidditch Pitch. One of the castle's towers held an owlery, which housed all the owls owned by the school and by students. The castle was set upon huge rocks above the Black Lake. Its three highest towers were the Astronomy, Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor Towers. The castle's 142 staircases were known to change position. The castle was known for its many updates and changes in layout throughout the years. It should be noted that some rooms in the school tended to "move around", as did the steps on the Grand Staircase. Albus Dumbledore once noted that even he did not know all of Hogwarts' secrets. The castle had been around for centuries, and consequently had a long history of ancient magic.

The school had numerous ancient charms and spells on and around it to safeguard it from danger. In addition to the fact that there were enchantments that prevented people from entering by stealth, it was also impossible for a Muggle to see it, as the school was bewitched so that when they looked at it, all they saw were some old ruins and several warnings of danger. Witches and wizards could not Apparate or Disapparate in Hogwarts grounds, except for when the Headmaster lifted the enchantment, whether only in certain areas or for the entire campus, so as to make the school less vulnerable when it served the headmaster to allow Apparition. Electricity and electronic devices were not found at Hogwarts. Due to the high levels of magic, Muggle substitutes for magic, such as computers, radar and electricity, "went haywire" around Hogwarts. Radios, however, were an exception as they were not powered by electricity, but by magic.

Wizardry, often shortened to Hogwarts, was the British wizarding school located in the Scottish Highlands.[6][7] Founded in the 10th century, Hogwarts was regarded as one of the finest institutions of magic in the wizarding world, alongside other notable schools including Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, the Durmstrang Institute and Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, among others collectively forming the eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide.[4]

Any magical children residing in Great Britain or Ireland who had reached the age of eleven by the start of the incoming term were accepted as students.[8][9] They were registered by the Quill of Acceptance and Book of Admittance when they first displayed magical ability,[10] and their acceptance was confirmed by owl post at age eleven. However, if the child in question was Muggle-born or raised by Muggles, like Harry Potter, with no knowledge of the wizarding world, a special messenger from the school visited the child and his or her family to inform them of their magical heritage and the existence of the wizarding world.[11] It was also possible for students to transfer to the school.

The precise location of the school could never be uncovered because it was rendered Unplottable. To Muggles, the school appeared to be an old, abandoned castle. Similarly, most wizarding schools' locations were protected in order to protect the students and schools themselves from any harm.[4] It was a state-owned school, funded by the British Ministry of Magic.[12]

The school's motto was Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus (Draco Dormiens Nvnqvam Titillandvs), which, translated from Latin, means "Never tickle a sleeping dragon".

Regulus ordered Kreacher to return to the island with him, substituted a fake horcrux for the real one, then told Kreacher to take the real Horcrux locket and destroy it. Regulus, who had drunk the potion in the stone basin to get to the locket, was attacked and drowned by the Inferi in the underground lake (DH10). He had forbidden Kreacher to tell anyone in the family what had happened, so they would be protected by not knowing.

It is likely that he got along well with Bellatrix and Narcissa since they all supported pure-blood supremacy and were involved with the Death Eaters. It is possible that he and Andromeda weren't close because the latter was considered a blood traitor for marrying Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born. She was also removed from the Black family tree tapestry. However, Bellatrix was a fanatically loyal Death Eater who would die for Voldemort. She was also among Voldemort's most sadistic followers. Regulus Black was the younger brother of Sirius Black. Unlike Sirius, Regulus was favored by their parents because he shared their overweening pride in their heritage and their belief in pure-blood supremacy; indeed, Regulus became one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters around 1977 at the age of sixteen.

Sirius thought that Regulus was killed by Death Eaters because he panicked and tried to leave, calling him “Stupid” and implying that he was a coward. Sirius told Harry dismissively “I doubt Regulus was ever important enough to be killed by Voldemort in person” Remus Lupin believed the same about Regulus, that when he fled the Death Eaters he “only managed (to live) a few days as far as I can remember” (HBP6).

In reality, Regulus began to have a change of heart when he saw first hand what the Dark Lord was doing.

In 1979, Voldemort demanded the use of a house-elf, and Regulus sent Kreacher, a family elf that he was very fond of. However, the elf was left behind to die by Voldemort on the secret island in the sea cave where he’d hidden the locket Horcrux. Regulus had commanded Kreacher to come back, however, so the elf was compelled to return using house-elf magic. The story Kreacher told Regulus was the last straw and the young man became determined to destroy Voldemort From arrogant hints the Dark Lord had dropped, Regulus figured out what the locket was – an evil Horcrux.

Despite hailing from a noble wizarding family, Sirius himself doubted Regulus was ever exemplary enough to be personally killed by Voldemort, showing just how high the barring standards that Death Eaters have for their membership. Regulus played as Seeker for the Slytherin Quidditch team during his time at Hogwarts, meaning he was a good flier, or at least so in his youth. Dark Arts: Being a former Death Eater, Regulus would have been well-versed in Dark Magic. Regulus also had knowledge of Horcruxes, which few understood, and even deduced that Voldemort made one, when no other Death Eaters knew. He also managed to slip past the defences that Voldemort placed on the locket and managed to retrieve it in the Cave, though at the cost of his own life at the hands of Voldemort's Inferi in the cave's waters.[11] Regulus and his parents, Orion and Walburga, had a good relationship. Because his brother, Sirius, didn't share his parents' ideology, their parents told Sirius that "Regulus was a better son than him". Regulus's parents were very glad that their son was Sorted into Slytherin house and that he became a Death Eater after leaving Hogwarts despite not being Death Eaters themselves. However, Regulus's parents were shocked when they learned what Voldemort would do to achieve his aims.

Regulus and his older brother Sirius didn't have a good relationship after their respective Sortings, in part because Sirius was Sorted into Gryffindor house. Sirius also disliked Regulus because of his ambition to become a Death Eater, but he was unaware that Regulus later attempted to destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Sirius regretted how young his brother died and wished Regulus hadn't been as soft to go with what their parents told him to do. Sirius originally spoke of his younger brother with derision, though his feelings later softened.

Regulus's relationships with other family members, such as his cousins Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa, are unknown.

Regulus has been known to have resembled his older brother with his black hair and haughty good looks common to their family. Harry Potter made an opinion that Regulus was "smaller, slighter, and rather less handsome than Sirius had been."[10] As a Death Eater, he bore the Dark Mark on his left inner forearm. Regulus, having been Sorted into Slytherin house, was eager to show similarity with his parents, unlike Sirius, who would rather show difference. Regulus's parents had a preference of pure-blooded wizards, so it is assumed that Regulus took after them whilst growing up. Regulus's room was full of Slytherin banners, unlike Sirius's, whose room was full of Gryffindor's. Harry at one point compared the sign on Regulus's bedroom door to something that Percy Weasley would write suggesting some similarities in personality, namely haughtiness and pompousness.

Regulus, like his parents, admired Lord Voldemort, and believed that he was a great Dark wizard. However, after he became a Death Eater, he realised how far his master was willing to go to reach his goals, showing that Regulus had not been prepared for the reality of life as a Death Eater in spite of his general beliefs.[6] Regulus later discovered the Dark Lord's creation of at least one Horcrux and the reason for his immortality. Having turned against his master, he decided to destroy the locket while sacrificing himself in the process, which showed both his bravery and selflessness as well. He also commanded Kreacher, his family house-elf, not to tell his family what had happened in order to ensure their safety. This showed how much he cared for Kreacher and his family, including Sirius, in spite of their estrangement, while further exemplifying how willing he was to sacrifice himself for people he cared about. Regulus also respected Kreacher as well and was among those of many who believed that Voldemort would be destroyed by the Chosen One.

At the island with the basin of potion containing the locket, Regulus ordered Kreacher to take the locket once the potion was gone and replace it with the fake one, then escape without him and find a way to destroy the Horcrux. Regulus drank the potion himself, and when he tried to get water from the lake to quench his thirst, he was dragged to his death by the Inferi. Kreacher obeyed his master's final order and switched the lockets before escaping. However, despite his best efforts, he was unable to destroy the Horcrux. The true circumstances of Regulus's death were entirely unknown to the members of his family, as he had asked Kreacher to keep the events at the cave a secret due to this being safer for the family.[11] Sirius Black, not knowing the truth of the matter, came to believe that Regulus had simply gotten in too far and was killed for trying to back out of being a Death Eater.[12] Remus Lupin believed that Regulus had tried to back out of being a Death Eater, commenting that he thought Regulus had lasted "a few days" after his defection before he had been killed.

In 1997, Kreacher told Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger of Regulus's attempt to destroy the Horcrux, having been there himself, as the trio also sought to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes. They then realised that Regulus was R.A.B. that was signed on the note to Lord Voldemort. Following this, Harry gave Kreacher the counterfeit locket that Regulus had replaced the real one with, showing Harry's own respect for the house-elf. Kreacher later earned this respect by subsequently showing more respect towards Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The real locket was later destroyed by Ron Weasley with Gryffindor's Sword, finally accomplishing what Regulus had set out to do.

During the Battle of Hogwarts, Kreacher, having rallied many of the school's house-elves to assist him, ordered them to fight for Regulus while wielding knives against the Death Eaters' knees and shins.[10]

Harry Potter discovered a photograph of Regulus's team years later, which suggested that he played as Seeker, based on the seating.[2][3] He attended Hogwarts from about 1972 to 1979. From a young age, Regulus admired Lord Voldemort and had an ambition to become a Death Eater later on in his life. Regulus had photos and articles about the Dark Lord and his followers cut from the Daily Prophet, which were hung in his bedroom near a painting of his family crest. Regulus received his Dark Mark around the age of sixteen, which his family approved of as Voldemort was seen as striving to achieve pure-blood supremacy over other wizards and Muggles. Even though his parents were never Death Eaters themselves, they agreed with many of Lord Voldemort's own beliefs.[9]

After becoming a Death Eater, Regulus began to consider abandoning Lord Voldemort, partly because his master mistreated and intended to kill the Black family's loyal house-elf Kreacher whilst setting up the security measures for one of his Horcruxes.[10] By 1979, Regulus had begun to have doubts about serving as a Death Eater, but was reluctant to act against the Death Eaters and Voldemort. One day, Voldemort asked Regulus for the use of his house-elf, Kreacher, and Regulus eagerly accepted as he wanted to please his master. Voldemort used Kreacher to test the defences around his locket Horcrux, leaving him to die afterwards. Kreacher was able to escape using house-elf magic and told Regulus of what had happened. Regulus worked out that the locket was a Horcrux and was the reason behind Voldemort's immortality.

This was the deciding factor in Regulus's defection. He created a duplicate of the locket and placed a note inside for Voldemort to find, expecting him to check on the Horcrux in the future, and then ordered Kreacher to take him to where the real locket was hidden. Kreacher guided Regulus past the cave's defences.

Regulus Arcturus[8] Black (1961 – 1979)[1] was an English pure-blood wizard, the youngest son of Orion and Walburga Black, and the younger brother of Sirius Black.

He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1972 and was Sorted into the Slytherin house.[7] Regulus became a Death Eater in his youth but defected when he found what Lord Voldemort would do in order to reach his aims. Regulus also learned about one of Voldemort's Horcruxes and decided to destroy it. He was killed after acquiring Salazar Slytherin's locket in 1979. Regulus was born in 1961 into the wealthy, pure-blooded Black family, as the youngest son of Orion and Walburga Black and younger brother of Sirius Black. It is assumed that he was named after his great-uncle, also named Regulus, and his paternal grandfather, Arcturus. Relatives included Bellatrix Lestrange, a loyal Death Eater of Lord Voldemort's, Andromeda Tonks, who married a Muggle-born and was subsequently disowned by the family, and Narcissa Malfoy, who married Death Eater Lucius Malfoy.

Regulus's parents considered him to be much different from his older brother Sirius Black. Although Sirius was the older son and heir, he didn't in any way whatsoever follow the Black family traditions, unlike Regulus. Their parents disapproved of this, and Sirius was later Sorted into Gryffindor house when he attended Hogwarts, causing an even bigger strain on his relationship with the rest of the family.

Following this, Sirius left home at the age of sixteen and was subsequently disowned and burned from the family tapestry by his parents like Andromeda Tonks a few years before. Regulus, on the other hand, was admired by his parents for his loyalty towards his family and upholding their traditions.

Hogwarts years (1972-1979) Regulus, unlike Sirius, was Sorted into Slytherin,[7] and became a member of his house Quidditch team.
