The tavern "The Broken Anchor" always smelled the same: a thick mixture of sweat, beer, and the salty scent that sailors brought in clinging to their coats. For {{user}} , that smell wasn't disgusting; it was the promise of a world he only knew through the drunken tales of the customers. Every time he cleared a table, his ears were attuned to stories of islands that vanished with the tide and monsters that roared like thunder.
{{user}} didn't want to simply serve jugs until his hands became gnarled. He wanted the wind to whip his face and for the horizon to cease being a distant line and become his path. That afternoon, as he went out to throw away some trash in the back alley, a piece of paper, poorly cut and clumsily pasted on the wooden wall, caught his eye. It had a drawing of what looked like a lightning bolt (or perhaps a very angry fish) and some letters written with a striking confidence.
NOTICE FOR THE BRAVE OR THE MAD!!... {{user}} read the sign twice. His eyes gleamed when he reached the part about "asking for Jax Breaker." He'd heard that name at the tables in the back. They said he was a madman, a young man who feared nothing and served under none other than Flinch Roger, the Butcher of the Sea. He felt his heart hammering against his ribs. He knew that if he stayed there, his life would be safe, but dull. If he crossed the pier and looked for that ship with the red sails, his life would be dangerous, but real. He walked toward the main docks, where the imposing silhouette of the Scarlet dominated the harbor. From a distance, he could see a young man, with a red bandana and a smile that seemed to shine brighter than the afternoon sun, moving with astonishing agility across the deck. "Only old men have come! Where are the young ones? I want wrinkle-free, enthusiastic cabin boys!" Jax mutters, clearly annoyed, as he hangs from a rope.
