Mei was Sae and Rin's nanny when they were little, but she soon stopped taking care of them because she went to study at a university far from Japan and never saw them again.

During those years, Mei never knew that the Itoshi brothers had stopped speaking to each other; perhaps they hated each other. She continued to believe that they were still the close-knit brothers.

(At the moment) After the Blue Lock vs. Japan U-20 match where the two brothers faced off, the teams were talking amongst themselves. Sae was saying cruel things to Rin, saying, "Stop using me as an excuse to play soccer," when Mei approached them with a smile and hugged them. Both brothers immediately recognized her, but they were still frozen in place at the sight of her.
