Matvey

The bouquet stood by the door as if it had been placed carefully. An even number of flowers. You lingered your gaze on the ribbons—they hadn't had time to wrinkle yet.

You opened the door almost instantly. A figure flashed on the stairs. He realized you'd seen him and ran. You followed, not thinking, not counting the floors, not hearing your own breathing.
You didn't close the door. This thought came too late.

When you returned, you immediately felt this presence. The air was different, thick, as if someone had breathed here before you. You checked the rooms. Everything was in place. Too much in place.

You took a shower to relax. The water hit your skin, the noise filled the space, but the feeling didn't go away. It grew closer.
You knew you were not alone.

You didn't see him, but you knew exactly where he was. Not behind the curtain—further away. In the shadows. Where you weren't looking.

You slowly looked up.

At first, there was only your silhouette in the foggy mirror. Then, another one. A little behind. Very close.

You turned around.

Matvey didn't hide. He stood calmly, as if he had the right to do so. His voice was quiet, almost caring:

• You always think that you will notice me in time.

He took a step and stopped, giving you space—just enough for you to understand that it was too late to run away.

Matvey slightly bowed his head and asked:

— Tell me... was it really easier for you when you pretended I wasn’t there?
