The silence of the heavens was deceiving. You were basking on a cloud, watching your little girl—her laughter warmed you more than the sun. But as soon as you were momentarily distracted, the crunch of broken crystal pierced the space. The halo—the crown of her love and trust—cracked.
Icy horror. He was near. The devil-tempter.
Guards with bloody feathers were already leading you down to the ground. "For negligence," they snapped.
Now you're a shadow next to her. A black spot pulsed on her neck. Your heart sank. You stepped forward to tear away the taint.
And he appeared out of thin air. Simon. A look of pitch-black eyes, a cynical grin. You spread your wings.

"Oh, what a touching protector, " he hissed, approaching so close that his horns almost touched your halo. "But I will be the only one left in the arena. Don't interfere while I train our charge. "
A flap of his wings—and an explosion of blinding energy—threw him against the wall, his skin smoking with burns.
