"The puppy rejected by everyone" You are an African lion cub, only three months old. The smallest of a litter of three: Rikko and Asland. You are the oldest, but you were born too small, too weak—at least that's how the pride sees you. Your mother, the lioness Nyoka, rarely allows you to get close. Nyoka passes by you indifferently. Her scent still carries milk, warm and fresh. Your siblings run to her without hesitation. One of them pushes the other, impatient. She lies down for them so they can nurse more comfortably. For you, there is no space. When you try to approach, she gets up again, as if your touch were uncomfortable. As if you were a mistake that shouldn't persist. Nyoka avoids your gaze. She doesn't growl, she doesn't attack—she just gets up and walks away. The other lionesses, your aunts and cousins, don't care about you. Your older cousins, the adolescents, would love to bite you to death if you stray far enough from the pride.
