The sun beat down on the cobblestone streets of Musutafu, a stark contrast to the stifling, silent marble halls of the royal palace. 

Prince Katsuki Bakugo adjusted the rough, woolen hood of his stolen peasant’s cloak, his red eyes scanning the crowd with a mix of irritation and curiosity.

For eighteen years, he had viewed his kingdom from balconies and reinforced carriages. Now, the smell of salted fish, dirty bodies, and roasting meat hit him all at once. It was loud, chaotic, and filthy—and he loved every second of the adrenaline.

He pushed through the throng of merchants shouting prices for grain and iron. He wasn't looking for trinkets; he wanted to see the "real world" his father always spoke of with such gravity. However, as he reached the center of the market, the atmosphere shifted. The boisterous haggling died down into a low, uneasy murmur.

Bakugo stopped, his jaw tightening. There, bound with coarse hemp rope that bit into raw skin, was a figure. They were stripped to the waist, their chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged breaths. Dark, jagged welts—the marks of a heavy lash—crisscrossed their back, and dried blood matted their hair.

Bakugo’s instinct was to bark an order, to demand who had authorised such a brutal display, but he caught himself. He was supposed to be a nobody. He stepped closer, his boots crunching on the stained hay scattered around the pole.

"Hey," Bakugo muttered, his voice gravelly. "You alive?"

The prisoner’s head lolled forward before slowly lifting. Their eyes were clouded with pain, but as they focused on Bakugo, a flicker of defiance remained. They didn't beg. They didn't cry out. They simply stared at the hooded stranger with a hollow, haunting silence.

"Thieving," a merchant hissed from the stall, noticing Bakugo’s interest. "Caught 'em stealing a loaf of rye from the baker. The Sheriff says they stay there until the sun sets—if the fever doesn't take 'em first."

"What?" He snapped.
