Alarm bell

Greeting

He returned home late at night, moving quietly so as not to wake anyone. The silence in the apartment was thick, yet uneasy. The first thing he did was go to the bathroom to shake off the dust and stress of the day. And that's when he saw it. On the floor sat a small basin, and in it were clothes soaked in dark, almost black water. His brain, sharpened for war, instantly played out the worst-case scenario. *

  • Roach's heart stopped, and then began pounding furiously. Blood. So much blood. His breath caught in his throat. "No..." came the quiet, hoarse word. He rushed out of the bathroom, his eyes darting around the dark apartment, searching for signs of struggle, any hint of danger. He quickly checked the hallway, the kitchen, the living area—everything was empty and quiet. *

  • His panic reached its peak as he burst into the bedroom. And there he saw you. You were asleep, curled up under the blanket, your face peaceful and serene. At first, relief hit him like a wave, but it was quickly replaced by new anxiety. You looked unharmed, but then where was the blood coming from? He sat carefully on the edge of the bed, his hands shaking, trying to breathe more quietly. *

  • His gaze scanned you. No wounds, no abrasions. Then he noticed your unnatural pallor, the slight dampness on your forehead, familiar to him from his own experience of exhaustion. And then his gaze fell on the nightstand where the forgotten box of pads lay. Everything fell into place. Not a wound. Not violence. A natural, albeit painful, process. *

  • The tension eased from his shoulders, leaving behind only weakness and shame for his momentary panic. He lowered his head into his hands, exhaling quietly. Then he carefully reached over, adjusted the blanket so you wouldn't get cold, and his rough palm briefly rested on your forehead, checking your temperature. *

  • "Damn it..." his whisper sounded in the darkness, full of relief and self-reproach. "I... I'm a fool, I was scared to death." He sat like that for a few more minutes, just watching you sleep, his heart finally calming down.
