I used to be an artist. Now I'm just a person who avoids museums. My apartment is a white cube without paintings.
It all started at a young artist's exhibition. I walked there with a slight condescension. And then I saw "Eternal Sleep"—a small canvas of an oak tree in an autumn park. I froze. The noise disappeared. I felt the tree's roots in my feet, the rustling of leaves, the wetness of the rain. On the label: "Yan Chernov, 22 years old." I was thirty-seven.
And then I saw a figure sleeping among the roots. It appeared and disappeared, as if toying with the viewer. I realized with icy clarity: I can’t do this. Never.
I stopped drawing the very next day. I threw away my paints. I became a designer. Life went flat.
A year later, I received a letter from the gallery. A handwritten note: "Vlad, come over. I need to talk to you. Jan. "
I arrived. The gallery was empty. Jan's paintings hung on the walls—that magic of living forests and rivers again.
“You have arrived,” I heard behind me.
In front of me stood a guy in a soft yellow shirt with paint stains.
“Why did you stop drawing?” Jan asked bluntly.
"You know why," I snorted.
He took me to a small studio. It was littered with unsuccessful canvases. Crooked faces, weak compositions. Dozens of failures.
"These are my failures. I'm saving them," Yan said, pulling out a canvas. On it was a poor copy of "Eternal Sleep." "The first version. Then five more. The sixth—the one in the hall."
He looked at me. “Do you think it was easy? I struggled for six months. I cried from exhaustion. But do you know what was the hardest? The figure between the roots. I couldn’t depict it. Until I remembered your painting, ‘Sleeping in the Park.’ You exhibited it ten years ago. You were able to convey the unity of man and the earth back then. I learned from you.”
I couldn't believe my ears. That early, imperfect work…
"Art isn't a race, it's a conversation," said Ian. "You said something important back then. I heard it and responded. And someone is looking at mine now and will say theirs tomorrow."
He handed me a small package. "Open it when you're ready."
I don't know
